Everyone talks about WW3 like it would be an extinction of all humans or something. Had the missile crisis actually led to WW3 half a century ago most of the destruction would be rebuilt by now almost to the point like it never happened other than slightly elevated odds of getting cancer like the Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents did (the former of which blasted 8 tons of atomized enrinched uranium and plutonium into the air, far more than most current fusion bombs that only use a small amount to trigger the fusion reaction). Fission bombs are "dirtier" than fusion devices, and Japan got hit with 2 of the former. 70 years later the only thing that marks the occassion are memorial plaques and a couple of repaired buildings that survived, everything else was rebuilt 10x better. I'd argue that overall we would be better off today, with 90% of the 3B humans killed off in the 1960's 2019 would be far less overcrowded (300M might breed back to 1B by now instead of 7.4B) and far less problems that come with that.
