It also depends on how old you are. If you are 55+, maybe you don't want to have to struggle and fight anymore and just relax....

Same in Canada. I asked to withdraw 5000 cad and they adked me why ? That's scary. Above 10 000 cad everything becomes a red flag. The banks have to file a report. Another scariest thing is that one major Canadian bank wasn't able to do an international wire transfer, so I never received my money and I had to complain otherwise, years later, I still would have no clue where my money was ? Incompetence or voluntary so customers would not be able to take large sums of money out of Canada ? But why leave it there ? There is nothing in Canada and with the ban on foreign buyers, you cannot even purchase a property. Then Canada complains, there is no international investments anymore. Lol. Are they stupid or what ? They have created their own problems. Mean and incompetent politicians over there with Trudeau at the head, followed closely by the witch Freeland!!!

My trust for Canada and its government has gone to basically '0' . I realized that during the pandemic.

I wouldn't want to give up my EU passport. It's good to belong to a community where you can just jump from one country to the other without any visa or anything else and where airfare are so affordable. Round trip ticket Lisbon, PT. to Nice, FR. : 38 Euros non stop flight |! With a common strong currency, it's easy to also travel and have some decent vacation outside the EU (of course maybe not during a pandemic but usually it is). It's good to know that if one of the EU country is attacked, the rest of the Eu will come and fight with you. It's good to be able to buy cheap and tasty food compared to many other countries like Canada, USA, and Panama or whatever... It feels good to be able to drink some good wine without breaking our budget like many do in Canada since alcohol is so expensive (and not even that good there). It's good to have so many different cultures in the same continent. Each country has its own charm. It's good to enjoy being a French citizen who resides outside France and not have to pay taxes at all. Many things remain good in Europe. Of course, it's far from being the perfect place on earth but there is much worse. Look at Ukraine for instance or Afghanistan.

You are right. My friend bought a property in Italy, unfinished. It took them 5 years to complete, a lawsuit against the contractors and many arguments between husband and wife ! Confusion : a real nightmare. Laws are not clear, rules and regulations neither. Also, even though, it's closed to the border with France, there is no store in walking distance. Need a car for everything. There is basically nothing around except other houses. I would never do that. You are right. Their best days are over for those countries. They don't want to change and embrace progress so they stay behind.
18
Don't go there. Not easy and not good. Too violent now
16
Excellent idea. That place has become so bad... In Q4, 21.5% emigrants left Canada that % was up 215% from the year before. There must be plenty of reasons to leave Canada now. This trend is more like to continue over the next years as people become more and more dissatisfied with the eroding quality of life in the freezer !
16
That was the smart thing to do before it's too late. I did the same thing and I have never felt so relieved !
13
You are 100% right Andrew !
13
No don't do that. It's one of the poorest countries in Europe and now with all the Ukrainian refugees, it's getting worse.
12
Anyways, most people are not interested in Australia......
11
Andorra good if you like the snow and mountains... Major drawback : it's an enclave. Also keep in mind the nearest airport is very far away which is not very convenient for a 'nomad capitalist' !
11
I was trying to exchange some of my Canadian dollar but the value against the euro and the USD is so low that I chose not to do it. It's ridiculous how the economy is bad in Canada.
11
Good decision. Canada sucks right now. Since the pandemics actually, everything became much worse than it was before.
11
Gosh we are wasting so many resources for those Ukranians that have never done anything for us. We really can't afford to waste any more time and money for this war. This is ridiculous. The EU is becoming really dumb. Better to help those poor turkish people now.
10
I agree 100%. He really screwed up so many things. Not to mention how xenophobic the government has become, forbidding foreigners to buy a condo ; that's evil. I did the same thing. Left that sh--y place and don't regret it one second but still waiting for my refund. Now with the CRA employees on strike, things are not gone get any better.
10
Not mentioning closing the border for almost 2 years ! That was the turning point for me !
10
Nobody does really. That country is not appealing .......
9
I am afraid you're right ! It's all about control and power !!!
8
Correct. Has to be avoided at all cost.
8
False : having a home or condo in Canada doesn't make you a resident at all no matter how many days you spend there , on the contrary, when you sell your place, the CRA will tax you 25% of your capital gain. So this doesn't prove anything at all. The CRA will get you, no matter what, even if they go on strike, like they are doing now.
8
100% against !
7
lol except in the DR
7
Well in France, with Marine Le Pen, the wealth tax would start at 800 000 euros, imagine. That would pretty much affect half of the population but in that case, very strange some politicians don't take into account the inflation factor. It's just inflated money, not backed by anything tangible. Too easy.
7
No don't take Canada's case for a generality ! It's different in other countries and will never be the same.
7
YEAH THATS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE WORST COUNTRIES, PEOPLE ARE SO COLD THERE.... AND SO MANY DRUG ADDICTS AND A EXPENSIVE LIFE
7
Actually all those parties are quite similar ; that's the sad part. More bureaucracy and more taxes but for what ? I don't know. Just to control people more I guess.....
6
You're right, not a good idea to keep money in the US. The best is to have a account in UDS somewhere else that can also bring you some interest.
6
Better sooner than later actually, The country could collapse, you never know with all the bad decisions made by the gov,
6
I left the Usa many years ago and don't regret it 1 second. So stressful for nothing in the end.
6
Sad but true, I guess so many people are trying to escape especially from the big cities....
6
Not for the wealthy but for princes and queens
5
Lol I also have problems with my maids, one of them put my Cashmere sweater in the laundry and now it's reduced to the size of an handkerchief ! Annoying to be after your employees all the time because they don't care......
5
True. You freeze in Portuguese houses in the winter since they are not isolated at all and it's so cold inside and the energy cost is very high. However, if you don't have to work, food is quite good and very cheap. The air quality is also good and of course they have 3 major international airports to escape ! If I were in my 20s or 30s, I would definitely not chose Portugal as the salaries are so low and taxes on everything quite high but if you made your money somewhere else, then life is ok in Portugal.
5
I know I have been waiting for my refund for months and nobody seems to care.... It's a country without a heart !
5
That's the same everywhere if you are new to the country
5
What's the point though ?
5
they voted for the leader they deserve apparently......
5
Sad but my life has gotten worse since I am in Canada ; that's why I am selling and preparing a sweet 'escape plan'. It may take some time but I am convinced that I am making the right decision,
4
Hotels can be dam noisy, no matter how much you spend especially in big cities. It's lawful.
4
I hope because that was really ridiculous to close borders for so long like in some Asian countries or Canada.
4
They don't have to convince us unfortunately; they will just implement it without our consent !!!
4
Why ? I noticed they asked too many private questions and required proof of everything.
4
USA = very mean country that gave billion dollars fines to European banks just for doing business with countries that they don't approve. The USA has done much much worse than that. So hypocritical going around punishing financial institutions stupidely.
4
The problem is not really Singapore or such and such country, it's the US that doesn't want it's citizens to have bank accounts abroad because the US government cannot control them so they put some hefty fines on the foreign banks that don't follow the US regulation of so foreign countries don't want to bother with Americans.....
4
Yes Andrew yes. Done it !
4
The worst part is that you need to keep it a minimum of 10 years. Ridiculous.
4
Good move. I did the exact same thing in Canada. Leaving the country for good. I do not regret my decision 1 second...
4
It's ok as long as you can manage them and keep everything under control but there are always some immigration/political risks depending on where you are buying. I wouldn't buy anything on the Dominican Republic for instance where you get mugged as soon as you get out of your 'armed security building' or in Canada for instance where they hate foreigners, tax them twice as much as since 2023 ban them anyway. Also I would cross out all the middle east for obvious reasons...
4
Yes when I think that the canadian government closed the country for nearly 2 years. Totally unjustified and irresponsible. I got rid off my condo in Toronto and don't regret it1 second !
