  5. Murder is not the end, but the means. War is a terrible machine that unleashes the worst, and by the tyranny of game-theoretic decision making, does not allow it to be subdued again easily. IIRC James Keegan, in "a history of warfare", argued that in ancient times, warfare was more about showing than acting. However, there is genetic evidence of whole populations having disappeared in Europe in pre-historic times, but only the males for some reason, so I doubt this argument holds up.
