  15. As a woman who's lived in Japan for 5 years, I will say it's relatively safe to walk around alone, even at night (depending on the area). However, as with pretty much all countries, it is generally less safe to live here as a woman than as a man. I have been followed a few times and have had to loop around so as not to give away where I was living. If I'm walking alone in areas like Shinjuku or Shibuya, there is a good chance I'll be stopped by guys doing nanpa ("girls hunting"). When I first came here, I was very naive and didn't understand completely that that was what they were doing, because sometimes they were lowkey about it, like "Teach me English, please" or "Where are you from?". But make no mistake, people in Tokyo don't just stop and talk to you for no purpose. If they do, I would just be wary. Don't assume you're safe just because it's Japan and take precautions like you would in any other country.

  19. I’m with the Swiss girl. My concern is that no one will help me if I ever get into any real trouble. I have felt faint on the trains; I’ve crouched in front of a vending machine after feeling ill when I’ve been alone and no one came to check on me. I’ve even heard people talking about me and speculating what might be wrong with me, but no help whatsoever. Bystander apathy is really bad here, so I can’t imagine the police helping me either.

  20. What's funny is that when I lived in Japan, anime is a part of almost everything there. Advertisements, road safety signs, political campaign commercials, public service announcements etc. If you've never been to Japan, don't be surprised when you're shopping and come across Spy X Family anime inspired meals at a restaurant or Hello Kitty condoms. Japan definitely is a unique culture but that's what makes it fun.

  21. I lived in Tokyo for 2 years. What I didn’t like about Japan is that ppl are so used to following orders that they lose their critical thinking skill. Eg. The teacher said this, or my boss told me to do this etc. also they seem to glorify suffering, like if you can suffer more, you are more noble. It’s quite strange. Love your channel

  22. The hardest part for me, I lived in Japan for 8 years, was that people are not open…they hide their true feelings and you never really know where you stand. Many things in Japan are wonderful, but since human relationships are the most important part of life I think foreigners struggle.

  28. I’m Japanese and one of my cultural shocks in America was that many people said "bless you" to me when I sneezed, even though I was a stranger to them. In Japan people don’t talk to others. I had heard "bless you" from my american friends so I knew what that meant, but I didn't expect that people use it to non-friends.

  30. I visited Japan back in 2005 as a young teenager. The first person who approached us to talk was an elder, even if English wasn't his first language. He taught us the kanji for the recycling bins before proceeding to encourage us to speak to Japanese people. He very strongly encouraged us to speak to people, especially young people, who are eager to learn about different cultures and meet people of different cultures. Afterward, he beckoned two groups of high schoolers to come and chat with us, and we had a few simple, short conversations together before moving on. I will never forget that experience.

  34. I was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan from 1984 until mid 1986. One day a friend and I were walking around the local economy off the base. An elderly Japanese man approached us saying, "You must eat in my restaurant, the General ate there once." He was dressed in white clothing like a chef and he insisted we follow him, "just a short distance", he said. We arrived at his restaurant and he seated us. He walked across the room and took a framed picture off the wall and carried it over to show us. "The General ate here, the General!" He showed us a black and white photo of himself as a much younger man standing beside General Douglas Macarthur in the very same restaurant. He was very proud of that photo. I think I had Sashami. Every outing in Japan was like that...full of wonderful surprises.

Rupa nailed it the first 5 minutes of the video, I dated a Japanese girl for about a year while living in Japan and she was looking at it as serious/having family type relationship as they tend to set things on a timeline, date for how many years, get married, do stuff together for about a year or so then start a family etc... If you're not serious they don't want to spend the time. Of course the whole foreigner can be three different things. One they're attracted to the fact that we're a bit more upfront as opposed to Japanese guys who are a bit more timid and shy. Two is they might see a foreigner as a one time, do something different in their life but ultimately marry a Japanese guy because they're not used to the language barrier/customs etc...Three... dare I say this, the ones learning English and/or live closer to places with a bit more foreigners (city, US bases etc..) want something different and want to live/get out of Japan scenario as that's all they've been to all their lives not to knowing that Japan life has been great for me IMO. A lot of girls in Japan have this agreement type mindset where if you tell them you like/love them then its really that. Whereas if you do this whole actions speak louder than words kind of deal, they take notice but they wont have a clue until you tell them. So my #1 advice is just be straight up to them and they will with you.

  37. Actually, I didn’t felt discriminant until I called the ambulance. I thanks for ambulance technician’s kind help, but they tried to contact hospital who could accept me. Because I’m a foreigner, I was rejected like 7 or 8 times. It takes 40 minutes to find a hospital which can accept foreign patient. But fortunately, we found a hospital to treat me, and thank god I am still alive🤣🤣

As a Japanese student, I have some messages for the people who are going to come to Japan. 1.Japanese sometimes stares at foreigners, but it's difinitely not for viciousness but for just curiosity. 2.However, they sometimes glare at you if you have bad manners in the restaurants or the train. You could leran some rules in Japanese. 3.If you are not good at Japanese, but you don't have to worry. All Japanese understand the difficulty of learning Japanese. Just you wanna try to understand Japanese and improve the ability, Japanese might realize your effort, and your Japanese also will be improved. Sorry my poor English. I'll be glad if my English make senses.

Immigration exists in all developed nations but it seems that even Japanese people believe their country is as homogenous as it presents itself

  45. While it may seem to the Japanese that us Americans are confident and carefree, it's not entirely true. What appears as a confident, "cool clothes wearing blonde person" is some times a person who's just as nervous or worried about there looks as any other person. For all the negative stereotypes about suicide in Japan, the rate is actually higher here in the US. It's usually connected to money problems or their self worth sadly. Anyway, as an American what I envy about the Japanese is the politeness and the cleanliness. Both countries have good things to offer though!

  49. Doesn't matter whether you are a foreigner or not. As a Japanese woman myself, I've encountered creepy men here in Japan before. I apologize on behalf of that person and bystanders on a bus who attacked this woman from Switzerland and did absolutely nothing about it. Most of Japanese aren't really confrontational and due to lack of English skills, we tend to shy away especially in that type of situation, doesn't mean it excuses their behavior at all.
