  31. In the early 1980s, three provinces were ready to secede from Canada. Many of the provinces unlocked the drawers and pulled out the petitions to become American states. Fortunately, Canada managed to resolve its problems so the petitions were put back in the drawer and the drawer locked. There are many differences between American and Canadian culture as well as our laws. Canada is a more liberal country that has many features that more resemble European countries than America. They would have to undergo an enormous cultural change. The US is not going to alter its culture to accommodate Canada, it would have to be the other way around. The US already has access to everything it would acquire in a merger. The difference is that it operates under their rules and laws, and we have to buy what we want from them. That's okay, nothing wrong with that. Given the generally amicable relations the US has with Canada it is unlikely that Canada would ever reject whatever it is that the US wants to buy. Canadians are obsessed with their huge southern neighbor. Most Canadians live within 100 miles of their southern border. They huddle close to it to get some of our heat. 😄 Many spend their winter vacations in Florida. Canada is having serious financial difficulties. Trudeau's government has been horrible for Canada, as bad as Biden's has been for the US. Generally our foreign policies are in alignment. The US is responsible for Canada's military defense. It's not just out of generosity, our security is tied to theirs. I hope Canada can work out its internal problems with a new government. I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. So Canadians can continue to wallow in their love hate relationship with America while about the nicest thing I can say is that Americans know Canada is there but rarely think about it more than a fleeting thought once every five years or so. Canada is one problem we don't have to worry about. In hard times in either country the two would unite as one until the problems are fixed. Then they can go back to b*itching about us. Personally I find it amusing.
