  4. I was born in Detroit in 1957 and my Aunt Pat worked & retired from the "Small Parts" Department @ J. L. Hudson's. As a little boy I remember my Mom taking me there on the bus to see Santa and riding the elevators inside to get my picture taken sitting on his lap. People dressed up to go shopping back then, and I remember the magic of Christmas time in the store. We would shop until it was time for Aunt Pat to get off work, and stop at Sanders to get a Hot Fudge Sundae before going home. GREAT times & a GREAT video, it brought back a flood of old time memories.

Princess Anne's grandson Lucas, the son of Zara and Mike Tindall, was born at Gatcombe Park in 2021 when his arrival came quite suddenly with no time for a trip to the hospital.

  17. Yes, going to downtown Detroit to shop at Hudson's was a memory from my early childhood. They had elevators with uniformed operators, there were escalators, I sat on a tiger to get my haircut at the barbershop, the displays at Christmastime, the Santa Claus Parade on Thanksgiving day, visiting a Hudson's Santa to tell him your Christmas wishes,,,,,and you had your choice of Santa from the North Pole, or Santa from the South Pole! Molasses cookies from the bakery department, ...and you didn't have to carry your packages home. Hudson's had a fleet of delivery trucks that brought your purchases to your home in those sturdy Hudson's boxes with handles for lifting and carrying.

  22. As someone who was raised in Detroit during the 1990s, which was like growing up in a giant ghost town. It feels good to see my city turn back into the beautiful place my parents and grandparents knew. Our city has seen so much redevelopment that I hardly recognize old neighborhoods that once was considered war zones become nice safe spaces for people. Downtown Detroit is one of the most architecturally diverse places in America next to Chicago and it’s getting better each year. Big thanks for this video, and can you please do a video on the fall of the Hudsons Department store and how the city brought that site back to life?

  23. I visited Falcon Lair in May. What I didn't know is that it's on Cielo Dr, and you can see what was the Sharon Tate Murder house from there. Also, a Lautner house (Schwimmer Residence) shares a driveway with Falcon Lair. An amazing place to visit!

  27. I'd like to see a deeper dive done on Marion Davies' Versailles-By-The-Sea. My first awareness of that mansion was in 1962, when my best friend's parents and several others built an A-frame beach chalet right next door to the mansion, to the south. In 1962, the swimming pool was empty and a slightly seedy beach club occupied the premises, trying to make a go of it, but the house looked sadly neglected, even then. I'd like to hear more about the glory years, the Davies era, when movie stars frolicked there; when David Niven and Errol Flynn rented an adjacent cottage and called it Cirrhosis By The Sea. You can see exteriors of my friend's parents' beach chalet in the film, "Bachelor Flat" (1962) with Terry-Thomas and Tuesday Weld. Now, some remains of Marion Davies' beach palace and a new swanky hotel (1990's) occupy the former site of the palace and the chalet.

He had a loft apartment in NYC, lived at Red Gate Farm, his late mother's home on Martha's Vineyard which is modest compared to these abandoned homes and he inherited initially, the president's home at the Kennedy Compound near where I've lived on the Cape!

  32. I have been to Hearst Castle at least 5 times in my life and have taken two of the current guided tours. I am always amazed at what I see and am glad that unlike many of the great houses in this country, this one has been saved and restored.

  33. I remember in December 1993 the store was opened for two weeks. Inventory was brought in and sold from the main level. The company must have been testing to see if it was worth reopening. The interior was still in good shape. When it closed in the early 1980s, some of the upper floors were still being used for accounting purposes until 1989. There was an employee, Charles F. Wendel who created Detroit's nationally famous J.L. Hudson Co. Thanksgiving Day parade. He was in charge of the window display's for years. He would travel to Europe for whatever the store needed, props, decorations, etc.

  50. I was in the Summer Palace and the Winter Palace in about 1983. The Winter Palace is my favourite. It is just so spectacular. My friends and I had visited Versailles not too long before that and even Versailles doesn't prepare you for the grandeur of the Romanov places. I'm not saying that I am supportive of wealthy royalty or anything like that. I'm a socialist by nature but the buildings are a part of mankind's heritage and we can all enjoy them now.
