Hopefully the Challenger III will retain the most important bit of kit, the Boiling Vessel.

When my father was in the Royal Sussex Regiment he was also issued with an American weapon, a Thompson SMG! (Complete with drum magazine). He never got to fire it but it looked impressive when guarding POWs.

‘A landlocked country with a dense population’. - Oh I don’t know, some of them are pretty intelligent. They do make some damn fine watches after all.
185
Suitable for use on the school run?
176
Amusing fact: The US Navy ship which is trialling their version is called the USS Ponce. (I kid you not).
82
I expect demand will be high for Christmas. Shop early!
75
Expect to see the civvy version blocking the school gates whilst young Tarquin and Cressida are being dropped off soon.
72
Strange for a Cold War veteran like me to see the RAF operating out of what in my day was Soviet territory. When I served in the RAF during the 1980s this airfield would almost certainly have been on the list for an application of ‘Instant Sunshine’!
60
As my ex-squaddie brother used to say, ‘Join the army and see Catterick’!
53
Nice thought but I can’t see it becoming ‘the largest navy in the world’ somehow! For example the US Navy currently has 299 deployable combat vessels, compared with the Royal Navy’s 67.
47
I’m more impressed by those coloured smoke firework things!
45
You can always tell an Ajax crewman. (You just can’t tell him much).
42
0:12 - I must say I like the no-nonsense targeting system, a man tapping you on the shoulder, pointing and then saying “Target!”
38
“Where did you get that howitzer?” “It came off the back of a lorry” 🚛
34
Looks great but perhaps a tad over-complex?
32
Well done Biggles! Back home in time for tea and medals.
26
What an amazing pair of guys. Osprey publish an excellent book giving further information about Gibraltar’s defences, including this battery.
21
@EthanThomson - True, but read the original comment - First in EUROPE. I don’t think the AH-Cobra is of European origin.
21
@misterbig9025 - Mainly Italians (captured in North Africa), with whom he got on very well and found them friendly and happy to be out of the war. On occasion he guarded Germans whom he said he found surly, arrogant and felt he couldn’t trust them.
19
Watches this and wistfully remembers sitting on top of The Rock of Gibraltar, watching the Nimrods taking off below me. Happy days.
19
This is what we called ‘FIBUA’ in my day.
19
Always had an admiration for the F-16, if it looks right, it IS right.
18
@Deadplayers-yb7xw - I can assure you when my father was issued his Thompson in 1942 it most certainly DID have a drum mag. It also had the vertical foregrip as they were old ‘cast-offs’ sent by the yanks to the British for use by 2nd-Line troops. Incidentally you can see the exact same weapon configuration used by Pte Pike in some episodes of Dad’s Army, most notably the episode ‘The Germans’. (The featuring the immortal ‘Don’t tell him Pike!’ Line). That was indeed what sparked my late father’s memory of the weapon. There are MANY photos (and video footage) of British troops with the round-mag Thompson. (There is even a famous photo of Winston Churchill holding said weapon). I do NOT lie and suggest you check military history before making erroneous statements and false accusations. And by the way, I have absolutely NO IDEA what an ‘LA8’ is, and cannot find any reference to such a WW2 weapon. I suggest you’re making it up.
17
Close encounters of the blurred kind! Black & white, blurry low-res blobs that could be absolutely anything.
16
I’m old enough to remember the fiasco that was the Nimrod AEW.
15
‘Baltic Air Policing’ - When I was in the UK forces back in the eighties we used to call this ‘Ringing the alarm bell’. I.e. flying as close as possible to the Warsaw Pact border, either on a zig-zag course alternately heading towards, then away from the border or heading directly at it and then turning away at the last possible moment. All this would generate absolutely tons of elint, as well as providing some close-range recon.

It’s a well known fact, confirmed by numerous interrogations of Argentinian POW’s, that many of the young conscripts were told they were going on exercise in the south of Argentina.
13
1:10 - The Foc's'le is the forward deck of the ship. It derives its name from the days of sailing ships when the raised forward deck was known as the “forecastle.” Sound it Out: Break down the word 'forecastle' into its individual sounds "fohk" + "suhl". Say these sounds out loud, exaggerating them at first. Practice until you can consistently produce them clearly.
13
Yes but can they get them into the shops for Christmas?
12
Of course. The nine 16” guns are not shown in the video.
12
Next they’ll be flying it on Spry Crisp N Dry!
11
‘Only what you see pal’
11
Nine people in that tiny thing?
11
There’s a restored Shackleton on display at the Gatwick Aviation Museum. Ex-crew members give tours inside it. Well worth a visit.
11
I can’t believe that numpty said “It’s the military version of the Avro Lincoln”. The Avro Lincoln WAS a military aircraft!
11
Camera resolution nearly as good as my Nan’s 1982 Kodak Disc 4000.
11
My mistake. I misread that this was going to be a tour of ARGOS.
11
I did, in my garden shed.
11
@bazbbeeb7226 - Er, no, I’m not. Why do you ask?
10
3:25 - looks like a Vulcan. (That would be a BIG drone!)
10
1:48 - I’d ask for my money back on that telly if I were you lads, that picture’s FAR too blurry!
10
0:06 - ‘19cm of vertical movement’ - That’s very precise! Who does such accurate measuring? (And where can I apply for the job?)
10
I’ve seen lots of uncrewed tanks in Ukraine, many of them unturretted too. 🇺🇦
10
Cowboy Animal - Well they haven’t really been secret for 60 years.
10
The presentation would have been a bit more impressive had the launcher been filled with some drill rounds rather than completely empty.
10
One has to question the logic of wearing camouflage AND Hi-Vis. Surely the one negates the other?

For the first time, my dear brother (ex-Queen’s Rgt) will be marching in London on Sunday. He’s usually the standard-bearer at our local parade and I’m so proud of him.
9
Great memories of sitting on the top of the rock and watching the Nimrods take off below me.
9
You certainly don’t want to be ‘complimented’ by the Royal Artillery!
