I'm not sure they are going to make it to Christmas. North Vietnam has the USSR giving it infinite resources. Russia has nobody. No allies.

The Donbass accusations were lies, paid for by Russia because states in the East were turning away from them because, well, let's just say you don't want anything to do with Russia at the state level. Russia has started that Ukraine is not a real country and it should be erased, absorbed into Russia. If that doesn't press every genocide fear button on your brain there's something wrong with you. At the very VERY least this is ethnic cleansing. The war crimes and terror attacks also point towards how they feel about other people, these are not good people.

  6.  @josegaucho2830  Although that's accepted logic, it's like trying to trade with organised crime to stop them being criminals. So no, that wouldn't have helped. Russia riddled every dollar of gas money because they thought having Europe dependent on gas would make us leery of supporting Ukraine. To them, it was all a criminal enterprise, maneuvering to prevent them from opposing them. Trade with Ukraine would be seen in the same way as trade with the EU. At leverage, not progression towards peace and a richer world. They're a Mafia state, a fascist hold-over from WW2. We defeated Hitler, we probably should have defeated Stalin next.

  9. On the NATO bit at the end. If the choice is between Ukraine joining NATO and Ukraine keeping a nuclear deterrent, it's NATO every time. Surely you can see that? They can't secure then, they can't maintain them and do they even have the knowledge to train soldiers to use them? Like, literally the manual? Do you really think soviet Russia should let Ukraine have all of this? No, NATO membership is a much better deterrent. You can't fix Russia, but you can at least contain them.

There's a reason stealth bombers are angular and very obviously designed) or absorbs radar energy. Does anybody really think dumping Mach 9.0s worth of energy into the atmosphere is in any way subtle. If it's shining like the sun then it's screaming across the entire EM spectrum. Sounds like the Russian Defense Industry noticed that there was a wiki page called Plasma Stealth (which nobody has made practical) and added it as a "feature" in their child like marketing material. When all they are really doing is turning Iskander upside down and strapping it to a Mig31.

  19.  @saltyfloridaman7163  Yeah, at the time challenger 2's gun was being selected there was no good anti obstacle round, there was only HESH which requires a rifle. Early 2000s America developed an anti-0bstacle round from the multi purpose HEAT round, but in the 90s there was only HEAT for the M256 and they only punch small holes through concrete. Now, decades later, there is the anti-anything programmable smart rounds which has finally obsoleted HESH, HEAT, HEAT-MP, anti-obstacle and Canister all in one round.

  20.  @sleepingninjaquiettime  The effective range of the 120mm smooth bore gun in Abrams has a maximum effective range of 3,000m not 5,000m. A Challenger 1 tank made a five kilometer hit, possibly due to it having a rifle, during desert storm but that's very much the exception, it would probably usually miss that kind of shot.

  28.  @tvgerbil1984  Indeed, it is much more effective than the HEAT-FS rounds everybody else is forced to use as anti-obstacle rounds. HEAT is specifically designed to focus all that explosive energy into making small holes through thick armour, there is very little in the way of secondary effects. After a brief discussion on R slash tanks it also appears that all the secondaries from HESH are in fact secondaries from spalling. So, sadly, HESH is completely obsolete against composite armour 😔 Thankfully we now have programmable effects for HEAT-FS smart rounds fired from 120mm smooth bores, so Challenger 3 no longer requires HESH and its rifle.

  29. So, hesh is defeated by spaced armour, no more spalling. But, can it still ignite fuel, hydraulics and ammunition when it's behind spaced armour? Or were those all secondary effects of the spalling?

Literally anything you want to do with hot water, it's there for you: 1) Making tea 2) Making coffee 3) Making Bovril 4) Heating your MREs 5) Hot water for washing up 6) Hot water for washing your filthy mug 7) Making Ukrainian soup It has a tap at the bottom, see? You heat the water then pour the water on whatever.

  32. ​ @tomk3732  Well the Dorchester armour was definitely tested in Iraq, repeatedly. All RPGs but one bounced. And we know both Challengers were very accurate, killing up to T-72s at extreme ranges. And the up-time was incredible, we easily maintained them and kept them running around the clock. And fighting the tank, even though it was against an inferior (if numerous) foe, proved its excellent ergonomics and the quality of their training. Yes it wasn't fighting T-90Ms, probably the only tank it would have difficulty killing, but it was never designed to. And had it been required, it would have been upgraded, for which is was designed, and taken it a step above every tank it could have faced.
