I think part the Soviets not charging to the rescue of the Poles in Warsaw is a question of strategy, logistics and politics. Yes, attacking south to the oil fields was important, as was trapping Army Group North. Also, looking at the distances covered by each offensive, it is extremely likely that the central attack through Poland was starting to lose cohesion and running low on supplies. However, I also agree that Stalin cynically decided not to support the uprising because it was a good opportunity to have a third party (Germany) dispose of most of the Polish Home Army for him. I also recall that the British and Polish Government in Exile tried to make arrangements with the Soviets to use airfields in the Soviet zone, but were denied access. Having read the chapter on this in the Cavendish history of WW2 my conclusion is the uprising was poorly timed, and that timing served Stalin well.
