@Michael-Archonaeus You are ignoring (either mistakenly or deliberately) the fact that in this context μισέω means to "put aside", not "hate" as it is interpreted in English. In other words, you should put aside those things that lead you away from God.

@Michael-Archonaeus This issue arises because of a mis-translation from the Greek. The context in which the word was used in the original text is not "hate", but rather "put aside". Luke 14:26 uses the term μισέω ("hate" in many, perhaps all, English translations) in a context that reasonably shows its usage to be something other than "an adversarial emotion we recognize as 'hate.'" That is, it is used in a relative sense there, where Christ is comparing the fact that one ought to "detest" father, mother, wife, child, brother, sister, and their own self if any of those get in the way of being his disciple (i.e. following Him). So no person, and no person's personal priorities, are to be placed above the priority of the Person of Christ and His priorities. Hence, it is used in a relative sense in this context. So, in other words, we should "put aside" anything that leads us away from God and doing what is morally and ethically right.

I think you conflated altruism with idealism. Altruism means trying to help those who are suffering, while idealism means you want to change the world to conform to your ideas. The issue with idealism (and idealists) is that they often get nasty and blame others for the failure of their poorly conceived ideas. And this is nothing new. One need only look at what happened during the French Revolution (where idealism, not socialism, lead to over 10,000 executions. Or the messes created during the 1848 revolutions. Or the Paris Commune. Those weren't socialist revolutions, but they certainly were fueled by idealism.
