The difference between the ends of the two wars was that in WW1 no German territory had been overrun by the Allied forces, while in WW2 the entire country was overrun. In other words, there was no visual confirmation by the general populace in 1918 that they had lost (the German heartland was virtually untouched), whereas 27 years later there was no way you could really dispute the defeat.

I always thought it horribly ironic that the two men who lost the war (Hindenburg and Ludendorff) are the two men who started by myth of the "stab in the back" to deflect criticism onto the politicians. A myth that was perpetuated by their fellow officers. Just so they could avoid condemnation for losing the war. So much for the honor of the German officer corps.
