@OntarioBearHunter IIRC, those studies on the effects of vehicular MGs vs. Aircraft focused on kill ratios. But that isn't the primary point of an AA MG on a vehicle (or ground fire from infantry troops). The primary aim is to throw off the pilot (incoming tracers look far more.of a risk than they actually are, due to how our visual system works and how bad humans are at interpreting high speeds). If he dumps his bomb load 500m early, or even just banks and goes elsewhere, the ground pounder wins.

@GlowingSpamraam Soviets equipped their tanks with AA capable MGs long before helicopters (or ground based ATGM teams, another good use of a commander's MG) were really a serious threat.
