  1. In fact, at the end of the war, many SS soldiers shed their uniforms because so many were being shot on site even after surrendering just because they were SS. The Russians were more likely to do so because of the destruction of their country and the allies because of what they saw at the concentration camps.

  2. Many people have commented on the effectiveness of the allied bombing campaign. I had a customer who had photo albums of reconnaissance pictures of German cities after bombing runs. There were probably 30 or so pages per album and probably 6-8 albums per box and the boxes were stacked three high, fwo deep and six long just to give yoh an idea of the volume of photographs. The cities were totally devastated. I don't care who you are that campaign had to have an effect on the populous. Imagine not knowing when you can take a shower much less drink safe water, eat a hot meal, work in a place that hasn't been flattened, sleep under a warm dry roof and get around streets filled with debris. It had to have an effect.

When the second Gulf Oil war ended, we were discussing about how the US would not let anyone who worked for the Saddam regime work in civil service again. He thought that was good. Now, most people work in civil service jobs, no matter the government, because they are the most secure jobs (there will always be a government of some kind), and generally good pay and benefits. They just want to put food on the table like most people. I asked him, how would you feel if a foreign power took over NYS and then said that you could no longer work for the state government because you worked there under the previous state government? He demurred.

Both the Nazis and communists are exclusive societies mostly for the elite. A lot of the common people don't even like them but are powerless to do much about it and go along with policies just to survive.

  47. The German high command was hampered by decisions that Adolf Hitler made. Hitler was his own worst enemy. He thought of himself as a great strategist. Hitler distrusted the high command because they were of Prussian stock and he blamed them for losing WWI. So, Hitler would countermand many orders given by his generals usually involving the capture of large units of men because Hitler would not allow them to fall back to a better defensive postion. Had Hitler's generals been given free reign over the operational and tactical decisions, the war might have taken a different turn.

  59. A narrow front strategy is exactly what the Germans wanted because the Germans were so good at combining forces needed in certain areas at certain times. They would have blunted any allied effort in one area only. Eisenhower was aware of German tactical strengths so the key was to keep the Germans stretched out and off balance.

One is the eastern European philosophy of revenge where they kill you and your entire family less one of the children grows up and comes to kill you.   74. First of all, Germany didn't have much of a surface navy. 2- British navy would have blown any German supply and support ships out of the water. 3- German supply chain was stretched as it was at the time. 4- Germany wasn't experienced enough in amphibious landings.

  89. One thing about movies, they're movies. By nature they are various shades of accurate to historical facts and all take artistic license to one degree or another. With that said, it's the essence of the movie and what it's trying to portray that is important. "Pearl Harbor", a total disaster of a movie and an insult to anyone who was there. "Come and See", an inspirational movie to make you want to never see another war.

It amazes me that the Germans threw asside their masterful strategic doctrine of fast encirclement of enemy forces in order to destroy them and focus on using their forces for blunt force urban warfare tactics.
