Arguably a lack of genuine democracy got us into this mess. Most of the public agreed with Enoch Powell. Had their will been manifest in government we'd have avoided so much trouble. Most of the really damaging social changes have happened against the will of the majority public.

@Neil-z7n Individualism can be taken too-far. For much of Western history the family - not the individual - was the most important unit of society. Moving from that model to our hyper-individualist societies has produced mixed results. Some positive, some negative.
