Possibly the Germans were short of pistols, especially 9mm ones. And the did keep the High Power in production in WW2.

@TheFanatical1 The Germans liked the P08 but they could not get enough of them. Throughout WW1 they issued small calibre blowback pistols to rear echelon troops. And even considered versions scaled up to 9x19mm. Another locked breech pistol to supplement the P08 and C96 would have been a godsend.

Most militaries only issued two or three magazines per pistol. If you lost them you probably couldn't get replacements while on campaign. And if you did you'd probably have to pay for them. That's why so many old European semi-auto pistols have a heel release rather than a thumb button.

Quite possible. C.1950 the British Army tested the Colt Commander in 9x19mm as a lighter alternative to the High Power.
