  1. Eric Sykes was not just James Fairburn's friend and sidekick. He was also an interesting man in his own right. An experienced shikari and target shooter, Sykes advised Fairburn on firearms, their use and training, even before he officially joined the SMP, as an unpaid reserve in 1926. As a business man, Sykes used his position as the Shanghai agent for Colt, Remington, and several European arms firms to obtain weapons, often adapted, suited to the needs of the SMP. Also Sykes was probably the MI-6 Station Chief in Shanghai, between the Wars.
