If the rod bent in the barrel, and scrapped along it, the rifling would be worn more quickly. Also rod grenades originally had a spring clip behind the warhead, to stop the grenade being lost while moving. The launch impulse had to be sharp enough to overcome the clip's resistance.

@sethrich5998 The P17 does exist. That was the British designation for the M 1917 rifle in WW2. To differentiate it from the M1917 machine gun and M1917 revolvers also issued to the Home Guard.
