  5. Apparently, Ukraine gives them a choice if they want to be exchanged, or not. It's not often mentioned, but Ukraine, in some cases, even offers a new identity for some prisoners of war if can be proven they did not commit actual war crimes. Zelensky has openly stated as such, somewhere in the beginning of this invasion.

  8. That's the thing that àctually worries me. By now, it must be pretty clear to those annexed RF states that the 'feared Russian army' is a bit of a paper tiger, and that only the mercenaries exhibit something like "military prowess".. Many of those states house ICBM launch bases, and other nukes, ànd -thanks to Russia's Cold-War habit of trying to spread the risk of not being able to shoot back when Russia gets nuked, some of them àlso have their own launch keys.. And to add to the risk, many have blood-feuds running for centuries with their neighbours. The brutal power of the Russian army that kept them from going for each others' throat has fallen away to a large part. It only needs a spark for (nuclear) hell to break loose. Probably also one of the reasons that Putain is so cruel in ordering attacks on civilian targets: To make it look as if he's still a "Strong Man" to those states.

The west has "won" the Cold War by simply óutspending- and óutproducing the USSR, even while there was an economic crisis going-on in the late 70's, early 80's in many a Western Country. Remember the oil-crisis? (The US was booming, though). Currently the Russian Industrial complex is many more times corrupt than it ever was under, say, Brezhjnev (Even if he dìd collect Rolls-Royces) So, not too crazy an idea that it can be done again.

  11. Seems exactly what Ukraine is doing. No 'big push', just knawing away at the occupiers, bit by bit. First pummel the roads and bridges to a pulp, then Lobbing grenades and missiles at the Orcs from outside of the range of Russian Artillery. The advantage of having modern 30- to 40km range M777 Howitzers, some even with guided shells.. , against Russia's 25km range Artillery and their quickly dwindling stock of cruise-missiles, of which more & more are shot out of the sky. (I wonder if the German Gepard is already doing it's 'thing' )

So, in retrospect, I don't think Ukraine wants to slaughter the 20.000 orcs. But if the orcs dón't take the chance offered to walk back home.. well... 😈

  15. Beau of the fifth column already stated as such at the beginning of the invasion. Informed intel estimated an airwar to take about two weeks at worst, before NATO would have total air superiority. From that moment-on, it would have been just mopping-up what remained of Russia's ground troops by first shelling them precisely, and relentless, and then steamrolling them with Abrams M1's, Leopard 2A6's, Leclerc's, PLUS that NATO dòesn't have to limit itself to 70km HIMARS systems. I.E. Its troops can keep a healthy distance from the Russians, and use the 300km ones... There was some uncertainty about the actual quality of the Russian Army, especially its Special Forces, but they have proven to be a good old mess of bad maintenance, crappy communication and obsolete tactics. The only thing it has going for it, is that there are so many orcs. But hey, who knows. Maybe Putin hàs held back Russia's "very VERY Special and advanced troops and weapons".. As StPetersburg (and recently Indian, African- and some Arab ) trolls want us to believe, and will deploy them anytime now.. anytime.. *crickets.. 😋

About the current halting of further advances around Kherson. Given Ukraine's excellent tacticians, it's quite possible the Ukes are just keeping the orcs busy, allocating jùst enough resources towards that, while preparing something big for when the ground freezes allover the Donbass. Orcs dug-in around Kherson, cannot be deployed elsewhere... Ponder that for a bit.  On a side-note.. that street interview with those elderly women, is a tad skewed imho. Most elderly people in Russia, especially spoilt Moscovites, long for the "old days" (read: the USSR'), for a past that actually didn't exist, when everything seemed simple with one benevolent 'strong man' that decided everything, forgetting about the shortages, the empty shelves, the Dollar-shops that only 'certain people' had access to. The crappy quality of clothing, food, household appliances (if at all available) The KGB keeping a constant watch what You were up to etc. etc. Nostalgia is one seriously powerful drug for oldies. And if the interviewer got a negative answer about Putin, You can bet Your butt they don't dáre show it. No-one likes those "Special" Spa's in Siberia.. 😋

But I'll indulge ya: Russian anti-tank ordnance has been fired at Abrams, Leopards and Challengers in Iraq and Afghanistan in huge quantities.. grenade launchers, rockets and artillery. The worst that happened was that tracks got blown-off. immobilising the tank. IED's were much more of a problem, which was finally tackled by adding more spaced-armour. (It's those odd, thick blocks you see hanging off the skirts of f.i. Challengers) and adapting the armour on the underside of f.i. the Leopards used in Afghanistan.

  50. Indeed. It starts with a moist foot, then toes freeze, then the foot turns black. And doing exhausting things like running from shelling or drones makes one sweat. Insufficient clothing makes the sweat freeze, and hypothermia can no longer be prevented. Russians also have a booze-problem. What I learnt in the (admittedly meagre) low temperature training, was that booze makes you feel warm, but actually makes your body cool down even further, but you don't notice, or notice too late that you're cold. Ukraine is also a fair bit of relatively flat agricultural lands. If the wind picks-up, and You're already cold due to crappy gear, it gets even worse. So there's that.
