Thanks. My progressive great-grandfather raised money to erect that statue in the 1920s, and he wrote a chronicle of that regiment called Colonel Heg and his Boys ( Oberst Heg og hans Gutter )

Dumping Colonel Heg into Lake Monona and kicking Sen. Tim Carpenter in the head caused me to post "If you donate to BLM, you're either a thug or too dumb to breathe without reminders. Unfriend me now. I want nothing to do with domestic terrorists." That caused 4 new college grad females to post "Reeeee! Racist! Bully!" on my thread and unfriend me. I feel good!

@realisticthought1781 These Norwegian immigrants all volunteered. And many of them thought they were fighting for a couple of noble causes--I've read some of their letters home. Nordmen I Amerika had a strong tradition of abolition, as a whole, of women's suffrage, which Norway had before we did, and a whole host of decent causes (Thorstein Veblen addressed the excesses of the Gilded Age best). Norwegian immigrants knew the red, white, and blue as the colors of their old home and their new one. Time-honored freedom colors.
