  2. Obama's first year was the year nobody was hiring nurses. Mayo hired me 2 years later, and I was told that I was my unit's first hire in 18 months, just one of over 50 applicants. Imagine an economy so crappy that nurses can not find decent work.

  4. What fallout shelters? I saw an old, rusting fallout shelter sign tacked on a building recently and remembered that fallout shelter survival crackers were already tasting stale in 1977. (Yes, they were!)

  7.  @generalawareness101  Memphis has had a bad feel to it for a while, now. We will be coming through next month on the way to NOLA, where my spouse is from. We don't actually plan on going into NOLA proper; husband says he would "rather take a beating". Edit: this just in! Not taking a trip south this year, after all. As with 2008, it's Staycation City.

  12.  @generalawareness101  Curious as to where you live that human food is that bad. In the rural Midwest where I am, only the occasional food item goes missing. Cabbages, one week. And last week I noticed that a restaurant was selling half-chicken dinners for $20. That was a real WTF moment.
