I had an American friend who was in the U.K.working at my college. He slipped on the stairs and broke his arm, he begged me not to call an ambulance and was terrified of the costs in the hospital. When I went to pick him up he said that the they had made a mistake and let him leave the hospital without charging him, he nearly collapsed when I said it was free.
