  6. I worked as a Sheriff at the 222 Main Street Courthouse between 2020-2021. The problem is very simple. The judges DO NOT send any of these criminals to jail for longer than a few days for even violent crimes and sexual assaults. I have been in Courtroom 101 and 102 for long enough to see the same criminals come and go for egregious crimes, yet the judges give them 'time served' in VPD custody, or a 1-day jail sentence. Often criminals are on release conditions for a litany of offenses pending trial, and they still commit violent crimes. Crown counsel doesn't recommend even close to the maximum for indictable offences. If a judge sentences a harsher sentence than previous rulings for a similar case, the sentence is appealed. This inevitably leads to sentences lengths shortening over time and are basically non-existent now. Simple answer: the criminals have learned that the system is powerless to convict them with any serious consequences. We enable criminals by labelling them victims in society and we do not hold them accountable for their actions. Everyone has a past, yet not everyone turns into a criminal. Police are overworked and are required to complete hours upon hours of paperwork for even a simple 'breach of release conditions'. All those hours of paperwork are worthless as the judges turn loose fresh arrests the next day in court. The system is broken and will only continue to get worse as less people are less willing to enter law enforcement as a profession. The pay isn't there, and it isn't worth getting injured on the job, especially now with the anti-police narrative reverberating in society and politics. It's a hot mess!
