  1. 8:00 Not only that, but soviet institutes were actively tryna hire as many people as possible, to fullfill the incentives in place to hire as many people as possible. Factories often times had extra workers that would simply walk around with absolutely nothing to do, and would simply pretend to do work. Same story with computers. Why get a computer, when you can just as easily hire 50 people to do the calculations? Why automate things, when you have a near inexhaustible supply of disposables to do the work? Thats the problem with ideology.

  4. I wonder how Thailand's automotive production and export ecosystem compares with India's. I noticed that India wasn't on that list of Thai car exports anywhere. From what I know about Tata Motors, they've been edging out a lot of competition in India for the small car, small truck and especially EV market. (I did a little reading. I guess they have some substantial presence in Thailand. I don't know how it compares to the Japanese presence)

  5. Thank you. I am a 2nd generation HAKKA residing in Singapore. My parents were from Southern China, they migrated to Singapore maybe in the early 1930. Remember the animosity with the other Chinese during my growing up year. Have to learn to fight to survive in that kind of environment then. Today this is no longer the case as there are many HAKKA ladies married to other Chinese sub group.

  6. Have you ever considered doing deep dive videos? I think it would be awesome to see your style of videos go even deeper into a topic, with interviews, etc and targeting closer to an hour run time. I know it is a big ask, since you are just 1 person and already publish a ton of content but it would be really cool to see a special episode every once in a while.

Just realised I have a lot of china ancestry, I’m half hakka a quarter China-chinese (I’m Malaysian-chinese btw) and half teochew(paternal side)- however I traced my ancestry on my surname and found out that one of my ancestors is a runaway prince (his family got dethroned so he was forced to escaped- in I forgot which dynasty-) I’m sad bc my chinese isn’t good at ALL, and I can’t speak hakka or teochew however I can still understand some basic hakka, I can make out the meaning of sentences bc it’s kind of similar to chinese xD

Even if a person just watches the videos at normal releases, I think this channel is a very worthwhile channel to subscribe to if you care about anything relevant to the world today, or even a few decades ago. The breadth (of the channel) is astonishing.

  22. It's basically unknown if a video will do well, but regardless you still cover a wide range of interesting topics. This channel actually exposes me to a wide range of topics I would otherwise never hear about and I'm grateful. You structure your script well, present info in a way that isn't overbearing, and throw in some great nerdy humor every so often. This actually one of my more favorite channels that I'm subscribed to.

  26. I wish I have a longer lifespan just to learn about these things... One thing that the creators must be careful about is the size and complexity.. I think today nobody has a complete knowledge about the internals of linux anymore (including, I believe, Linus and Kroah-Hartmann), because it got so huge and complicated. Linus himself said it is "bloated". Many people believe that linux would have the same capabilities and speed with a much smaller and simpler codebase.

You seem to be one of a small few who are able to dig through the details and clearly articulate the business of the semiconductor industry. At the end, you mentioned Samsung and TSMC are able to lock other competitors from the industry. Is this mainly due to IP they have secured around advanced node manufacturing?

  28. I'm surprised that theres no direct rail link to these TSMC facilities... Here in the UK, if a company were to build such large facilities with a high number of employees, the local council would probably require that a rail line or guided/busway be constructed to the new facility as terms for approval during the planning permission stage like what has been required in the new Barking Riverside development in London, GB or at the Redcar steelworks in North-East England...

  34. I lived a few years in China and was surprised to find that the milk market had many western brands made outside China (Germany, New Zealand…). They were often the lowest cost also which surprised me since most imported food items were of course much more expensive. I thought maybe it was because of government subsidies/minimum price to farms had them producing too much which they didn’t care.

Perhaps as you video alluded to they fell into the trap on spending too much on 'basic research' and not enough on 'applied research'? Or is it that they simply missed TSMC's contract business model and never had the scale to build businesses like Intel fab or Samsung fab?

  40. Great content and production value. 👍🏼 I’m in manufacturing and led a project the past several to expand our production footprint from Asia into the Americas. Many of the criteria you mentioned are spot on. I would also add local talent pool as a critical factor for expansion success. The project ultimately failed (after lots of $...) for a variety of reasons, including social and political unrest. But one of the reasons was within our control - the team here didn’t have enough bandwidth to expand their operations to become a truly global manufacturing operation. Will be curious to see how TSMC creates their SWAT team for the initial critical start-up phase. Arizona Heat is dry heat (har har). Will be supporting your Patroen, keep up the good work and thank you. Oh, would be great if you haven’t already to better understand the chip manufacturing flow from raw material in to wafer out and what are the operational processes to support that, e.g. water and energy intensity, storage criteria, etc. You already mention the clean room and modular and scalable layout which are important.   45. In the previous video I was kind of rooting for SMIC with the backstory of veteran Chinese natives coming back and starting something for themselves. But now I feel like the outcome of the lawsuit was probably justified. That email from that Marco Mora guy is imo as sleazy as it gets, putting pressure on people in the direction to do stuff you know isn't fair game. I don't know the full story, but on first impression it would possibly warrant personal trial as well. Awesome videos though!

  46. Thanks for the report as an ABC (American Born Chinese) I once in a while here my parents talk about this, good to understand it more clearly. My parents retreated to Taiwan when they were very little. My grandfather was a general so was able to arrange for the family to go there. Supposedly they were materially well off (had driver, car...to keep up appearances) but food wise was sort of tight. My mom got into a good USA masters college and was allowed to stay afterwards so my knowledge is limited about Taiwan.

  49. Here in Israel there are many projects that would love to have open source EDA even WITHOUT a PDK (i.e. moon lander project = SpaceIL) and many university projects in robotics & motion control. Also small startups can benefit from not spending millions on tools. I was at a satellite comm startup like that. Cadence & Synopsis don't care about who the customers are small startup = Intel = Qualcomm; more or less. This makes DARPA's idea a good innovation "base". These are national technology people, they think different (sorry for the pun)
