Not just the men! But the women and children too!

I thought this would be about water. Instead it's about industry collaboration, so I wasn't disappointed.

I once met a Cuban Chinese man. Very interesting to hear about Chinese who come from places other than America, China or Taiwan.

Thanks for the coverage. You do better than most Indian YouTubers in breaking this down. Well done.

I'm glad you loved your stay! I live and work in Eindhoven region (I work at the train station). You can realy see the influence of ASML and it's growth on this city. ASML expects if they want to continue their growth the region needs to get 80.000 extra inhabitants in less than 15 years, wich is an insane growth rate for this region. The Eindhoven city council is planning to build 17 more appartment skyscrapers (7 are 100m+) and they will also build a Bus Rapid Transit line to the ASML campus in Veldhoven.

Thank you, Jon! For your hard and diligent work, cranking out two in depth videos each week. I joined for the semiconductor insight and really enjoy the tangents you take into other industries and locations. 401K as I watch this.. I wish you a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Thank you for this! I had to smile when you mentioned your father at NSC...that's where I worked first...at their first fab (I don't think we called them that at the time!) in Danbury CT

Once again, great video! Can you make a video about your predictions about the next leader of China and the potential scenarios that can play out (i.e Xi continues as leader for another term, he names his own successor, his own premier succeeds him, or a completely new administration comes in., etc) I think it’ll be interesting to talk about it, thanks!

$20/minute is pretty cheap for a lithography machine to be down. Maybe it was $20k/minute? I had an uncle that attempted in-land shrimp farming 40 years ago, though was not successful. Shrimp are extremely difficult to farm, so it will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Thanks for making all these videos they are very unique and always very interesting topics. I learn so much from them

Thanks for being one of the best knowledge communicator out there dude.

Nearly 50 years ago, I used to work as a young engineer at the Institute of Scientific Instruments of the Czechoslovak Academy of Science. This institute was headed by prof. Armin Delong who independently pioneered scanning electron microscopy in the 1950s. His research resulted in a successful range of electron microscopes which were exported worldwide. The Soviet-bloc's first electron beam lithograph was also designed there. The institute still exists (Google up "Institute of Scientific Instruments") and its commercial spinoff TESCAN is now one of the world's leading manufacturers of Scanning Electron Microscopes. I myself left the institute in 1981, migrated to Australia and founded a company pioneering software-defined radio (Google up "winradio").

This is one of the best channels on YT for in-depth historical explanations of relatively arcane but interesting topics. There's a lot of social mobility provided by cities having good public transport networks. Helps people without cars get to jobs across the city with a reasonable commute duration. In lower density cities, buses routes seem to make sense. In higher density cities, a partially underground metropolitan rail network is great. Supposedly Japan's rail networks own the real-estate of the stations themselves, which are bustling shopping complexes. This provides another revenue source for operating the expensive rail system.

Last I heard TSMC is introducing N3E which is "only" a 60% density shrink as opposed to the standard 70%, but it's already yield ramping right. This shouldn't be a big issue since N5 was already a bigger leap over N7 than normal. 84% in the best cases actually. So from N7 to N3, on average, follows the 70% density shrink every two years.

You might not believe this but I worked at a company in the 90's that got a job from Sanyo Solar in Carson Ca. (LA county) to make ingot transfer carts for ingot right out of the growing machines. They were lined with 1/4" (6.25 mm) kelvar blanket material. They made Solar panels here in the US! Or at least the silicon wafers. That was a different era. Paying people a bowl of rice for a days work became the trend.

Having grown up in Hong Kong through the 60s and 70s I now see how we got our phone lines so quickly, how my Mother got her driving licence in 6 months, etc My Dad always denied he had ever seen corruption, but at New Years, so many red packets were given to a stream of people, most of whom I as a child only saw at that time, guys who only spoke Mandarin with my Dad, so no one else understood - thanks for the vid, brings back vivid memories

Detailed, truthful and understandable but not boring. Thanks for a great video!

These history videos of yours are my favorites. Pleas keep it up and tell more stories like these. I had no idea about these brave men and their contribution.

The quality of videos from Asianometry has always been ASTOUNDING! The research thorough. The presentation clean and engaging. THANK YOU!

As a chemist, I loved that line. For anyone confused, its actually through electrolysis. Attaching 2 wires to an electrical source and submerging them on opposite sides of a tank of water containing positive and negative ions. Positive ions are attracted to the negative electrode and vice versa(very simplified explanation but you get the gist)

Fantastic video containing a lot of details I wasn't really aware of. Thanks for making this!

Love from Singapore!

This was really good. It's incredible how many of our current cpus and SOCs are dependant on these machines and the massive amount of suppliers and fabs and clients that make this possible. I subbed straight away, and I'm going to see what else you have on your channel. Kodus :)

Must be patreon

Hello Jon, I am a Senior in highschool beginning my journey into EE, and your videos are a great way to learn about the EE industry as a whole, I like to say its all about learning to stand on the shoulders of giants, and your channels is the best way to learn for that. Thank you for your videos, I really appreciate them.
29
believe me, after 31 years in the semi industry (as in all industries) this is so much just a 1% tip of the iceburg --

Thank you for bringing this subject to light! Most channels are so Eurocentric and recycle the same content. Having some Asian history and geopolitics is a breath of fresh air. I also like the three part format. I don't usually sit around watching videos for half an hour, so having the option to watch it in parts makes it more convenient. Keep up the good work!

There's a book I have about an at the time competing company, Norsk Data, and it has a quite grave 1991 bullet point which reads "ND suffers the same fate as Wang, terminating in-house development of the last of their remaining own products". ND also went belly-up in 1992, after this book was published. There is a striking similarity in how both these two giants crumbled to dust in a record-short time, from the rise of open standards in professional computing (book not only mention PCs, but also puts great emphasis on UNIX-machines and in general standards from the likes of ISO, DIN and ANSI).

A Scanner down creates a lot of havoc on the track side as well. It's a rare opportunity to get some work done. Pretty crazy how much info you got in here. It'd be interesting to see what you could say about track dispensing purity and health

If you enjoyed this story, its worth reading up on how Huawei grew into a powerhouse through corporate espionage of product lines and R&D from Canada's Nortel Networks and Cisco. In Nortel's case the Chinese government reportedly had complete access to its internal networks for more than 10 years, and was constantly siphoning information (including designs, pricing and product roadmaps). I also highly recommend the book "The Hundred-Year Marathon Book" by Michael Pillsbury. I found it very insightful and well-written. The growth of SMIC and Huawei are such an important lessons for management in the securing of trade secrets. It's safe to say that all large companies are unknowingly having their corporate secrets siphoned away through ongoing corporate espionage (see the recent SolarWinds hack).

I found this interesting, in the U.K. most family’s Iv found have 3 or 2 children. I’m an only child both my mother and father have 2 other siblings. My grandparents had many siblings. My paternal grandfather being one of 10. My great grandmother was one out of 20 children.

I love the channel's content and I hope you continue to grow so others can see your videos man. Thanks so much for the regular uploads.

A like and a comment in support of the channel from me. Keep up the good work!

There are a lot of companies that depend on a founder (or in National Semi, a re-founder) who is quite successful at first and then fails to move with the times. National Semi seems to be one of these. AMD managed to have a life after Jerry Sanders, for instance. Apple is a unicorn in that one of its founders returned to restore the company not only to success, but to domination. Sporck was too dominant for too long, it appears.

I've been making that joke for the last 10 years. It makes me laugh, but it also hurts my soul.
28
Just wanted to say you are doing a great job on this channel - the subject matter, research, and analysis makes it a really enjoyable watch. Can’t wait till you dive into other industries
27
I'd love videos on Infineon and STMicroelectronics. I also read recently How Asia Works and I'm sure you'll love it too!
27
I think we all noticed and worried. He does sound more like his usual self.
27
Great breakdown on the packaging aspect of it! I’m a tech noob but even I could follow along with that so I appreciate it.
27
One of the most underrated channels on youtube, keep up the good work
27
almost 30k. i remember a few months ago around 10k. keep it up

Great video. My mom was born in Macau and I have been to Macau during Portuguese rule and under China.

'Mt Kilimanjaro of cash'😃😂😂😂 Hey there guys 👋🏽 From Tanzania here, where Mt Kilimanjaro is found 🇹🇿😊putting that aside, Nice Video, very informing. 🙂

I remember touring data centers in the late 90's & early 2000's and everything was enterprise Sun architecture as far as you could see in any direction. Floor after floor in each data center of nothing but Sun enterprise 42U racks packed with servers, storage and network stacks. Two years later going through the same places it was all cheap 1U high density Linux Red Hat clusters. The change was pretty dramatic but once IT leaders were convinced that open source was a safe move, they got out of Sun hardware and Solaris software as fast as they could
27
This was REALLY COOL!!!!! I didn't even know you wee in Taiwan. I wonder if you could call them up and ask them to take a tour. A lot of businesses here in the States do things like that, but usually have set times and dates and a limited number of spaces for each. Then they take you through a cool little tour and show you some of the things they do, and at the end they give you a souvenir... but doubt TSMC would be giving out any chips at the end of the tours 😂 Might be worth looking into, I think it would make for a GREAT video, especially if you speak the language since I doubt many English speaking tourists go to Taiwan to tour semiconductor factories LOL :D
27
Great video! By the way, UMNO is usually pronounced as one word "Umm noh"!
27
Love your videos. The best coverage and in depth review of TSMC anywhere.
27
Sounds like it was a hit event, really glad it wasn't some financial debacle.
27
my father had worked as foreman in NSC (national steel corporation) before, and he retired early before it was bankrupt, he realized that NSC has been mismanage and many employee receiving salary while absent during working hours. gladly my father received separation fee and most of others aren't.
27
honestly, i'm starting to love modern Taiwan more and more every day.
