  5. I agree with this video, but would like to pushback on multiple comments. Researchers and non-tenured professors are mostly brilliant people (from experience) who are also underpaid and largely exploited by universities alongside the youth and immigrants. They aren't the problem. The commenters saying they got into grad school and had their 'brilliance' held back by their colleagues are more a function of the Dunning-Kruger effect than the many real problems with academia. I hope people aren't getting fooled into taking the goof-ball comments too seriously.

  12. I read Think by Simon Blackburn based on one of your other videos to see how much I enjoyed philosophy. It was a great suggestion! Been enjoying the Great courses dive into metaphysics for my 2nd round of study. Wish I’d started years ago, I really enjoy the effort to comprehend & explore philosophy. I’d felt that way about mathematics before… can’t believe I didn’t know this existed.

I think placing books under the SF label could use a more nuanced positioning. While nobody will argue with you that Dune is a classic of Sf, I can imagine some raised eyebrows at statements like "1984 is actually SF, but technology caught up with it" or "Frankenstein is not (anymore?) considered SF, but literature" The label is quite volatile, as I see it, and arguments can be made on both sides. My first language isn't English but I'm getting a degree in it and I always wanted to read more english classics, because I've loved the experiences I've had with them so far, but I've been hesitating to pick up classics I'm really excited about because I know they will take me a longer time to read. This video reminds me that is such bullshit! I'll go pick up Jane Austen's Emma now, a book I've been putting off despite being super interested in reading

I know novels are all the rage, but even before getting a novel, Cele Goldsmith Lalli, then editor of Amazing and Fantastic, published Le Guin's first piece of fiction (Lalli being younger than Le Guin actually, I read a good article on her recently and her help in reviving the two magazines and S&S in particular). Great video, Jared!

  25. As someone with a PhD in critical theory (which is pretty much the same as continental philosophy) I’d like to provide a list for folks interested in continental philosophy. I’ll do so in the replies to this comment, and they’ll mostly be essays, or short books, not large tomes. The above video is good, but I’d argue it’s best for folks interested in traditional and/or analytic philosophy. The biggest difference is that analytic types are more interested in logic and systematic argumentation. They tend to take something for granted and then see where consistency will take you from there. Critical/continental types are more interested in essayist forms of writing, even verging on poetry, and questioning foundational things we take for granted.

  31. Really appreciate the time and care put into this video - my experience with philosophy is lacking in breadth. I do have one suggestion though. In respect to this being a recommendation list for beginners, I personally think Nietzsche’s Genealogy of Morals is a better recommendation for beginners than Beyond Good and Evil. BGE is actually my favorite work of Nietzsche’s, but I believe GOM to be a better introduction to his thought because of it being limited in scope with the topics the book covers. With BGE, you have a critique of dogmatic perspective in philosophy and the faith it’s predicated on, a chapter on how to become the perspectival philosopher Nietzsche has in mind for the philosophers of the future, a diagnosis of the religious neurosis and related modes of perspective, a chapter of miscellaneous aphorisms, the historical development of morality, the commonly accepted prejudices in academia, the blind morality in modernity’s “higher man”, and Nietzsche’s opinion on what actually constitutes virtuous morality. As someone who has tried to get friends in Nietzsche, I’ve noticed in large they really struggle with BGE. But with GOM covering Nietzsche’s theory on the two morality valuation systems and their development throughout history, a discussion on the historical development of bad conscience and the tools of the psyche which are used in relation to the phenomena of bad conscience, and a deep dive into what constitutes the meaning of ascetic ideals and how that meaning is contingent on the individual’s value system, I find that beginners have a much easier time chewing on this book. And, in regards to illustrating how Christianity and the religious essence of platonism has heavily influenced modern morality, I think this book fits the bill much better given its limited scope. Again, just wanted to say I really enjoyed the video. Just wanted to share my experience with trying to get people into Nietzsche, as I think his writings are very valuable

  36. Man, your recommendations have so much overlap with my taste that you’re basically my go-to review guy now. That has effectively saved me hours of time and at least as much monetary investment as the donation. Thanks for the work that you do, and I’m genuinely sorry to hear that you’re facing the difficult uncertainty of being laid off. As a fellow academic turned engineer working in Austin’s tech scene, I can empathize with the position you’re in (although I was a cognitive science guy, not strictly philosophy). The uncertainty can be especially difficult to wrestle with as men who are fathers. Keep your head up and try not to mistakenly internalize factors outside of your control or assign them false senses of meaning. Here’s my genuine hope that you can have all the forces of the universe align to generate a platform for your successful career (YouTube or otherwise). Cheers.

  43. I would strongly suggest for you to read Malazan. Book 8, Toll the Hounds is amazing in a literary way. Not that the others are not good, on the contrary, but that one has so many interesting topics and the structure is great. The places, settings, and culture that he shares with us along the myriad of characters, is hard to match. Also, I think the first book that make think of fantasy-scify as something serious, was the dispossessed Ursula K Leguin. Her prose and topics are so universal that is sad so many people dismiss them just because they are fantasy/scify.

  45. Hi Jared- I’m a grad student in physics right now and think your overview of administrative bloat is all too true. I was attending Laurentian University, a small mostly undergrad school in North Ontario 🇨🇦, and due largely to administrative faults- careless spending and borrowing, this school became insolvent in Feb 2021. At this point, I was finishing my 3rd year of undergrad when the entirety of the physics faculty was laid off. In my opinion, they rank-ordered programs by admission and made a hard cut at some threshold. Naturally, they also cut philosophy, music, math… all of which had low enrolment.
