  1. I liked the step by step, walk through. It shows what is really needed to solve an electrical problem. Showing the fuse blowing, was interesting. Those leads melting should have caused no damage. It burned way to quick. Car wires are a lot heavier than that. But this is a little lesson. Don't buy cheap tools that are not fused for the gauged wire used for leads, unless you want to fry it. Not a bust on Ray, the tool was there and it could have fried almost anytime. Meaning, you think this would be the only time you look for a dead short? See the whole video was a learning experience. See ya tomorrow. Ray.

  5. Great points ! I was a tire buster, LOF, alignment guy when I first started. It sucked I would go home tired (pun) and dirty just to wake and do it again. Then I learned that the company would pay for training ! So I took full advantage and got my ASE Master and 100% GM tech college, that must have cost the dealership a lot of money. When I was down to only being able to take classes when available I was at $37.50 PFRH I was the go to guy and got all the headache jobs. They would never let me touch the gravy work, if they did I would do it with a smile. After all they paid $ to get me to that pay rate. It's a double edged sword. BTW there is a reason there are very few techs over 55 any more. Nobody wants to do the job anymore, because of the very things you pointed out and they got out. I wish we were paid like doctors, missed appointments = $ or I spend 15min and charge $590. But I digress. If I could still do the job I'd go back in a heartbeat, I gave up a $10,000 sign on because my body gave out. The back neck and shoulders go first after 25 years and I'm only 48.   6. Turns out this is actually how they are supposed to be, this is how they all ship. This is how they isolate the AC condenser section from the transmission cooler section. A factory budge to fix a design flaw that causes excessive heat to transfer from one cooler to the other.

I’ve been running my exotic car service out of my own garage but I’m getting too many customers now and am looking for the same thing man. Big step. Your super talented and you can do this bro.

  9. This reminds me of when I was doing a brake job on my daughter's car with my son in law and grandson. Whoever had put new tires on the car must have used a 3/4 " drive impact full force to put the wheels back on. I used a 4 way with a cheater bar and a jack stand to keep the 4 way level with the lug nut. I sprayed the lug nuts with blaster, let that set for awhile, and stood on the 4 way with s cheater bar with my 320lbs and bounced on it until they finally broke loose. Getting the wheels off took longer than the brake job. Unbelieveable laziness on the part of the guy that put the wheels on. If they had a flat on the side of the road, they'd never have been able to change tires.

I work commercial and there is so many shops that just buy the cheapest stuff around the area or ask for a even lower price for the parts but they won’t pass the discount to the customer lol. Also! Yes that orange part on the pad is the extra break in that import direct adds!

  13. Licensed optician in florida here. Gotta get some UNCOATED safety glasses for work, transitions are okay because they're not a coating. But oils/grease are going to destroy the antiglare on your lenses in record time and you won't enjoy using them at all. Peeling antiglare = can't see anything through the lenses anymore. Love your stuff Ray! Keep those glasses maintained, they look awesome.

I remember Saturday s people from miles away would bring there cars to be fixed. He worked under that Big old Oak tree. Parts were expensive back then but my Dad made them work. Great memories. Excellent, precise diagnosis with a minimum of cast about diagnosis, ignoring the codes that don’t fix the customer’s presenting problem, but making sure that critical secondary problems are addressed, so the customer is not forced to return for more visits or worse, give up on the vehicle. This was the Rainman at his best.

As I am sure you know Ray, using a customer supplied part is a bad thing to do because, if you get it all apart and the part does not fit, or it is a bad part (which is happening a lot these days) then you have to put it all back together and the customer will not want to pay anything for the labor because nothing was fixed. If it is a good part and it does fit but it goes out 3 months from now, the customer will blame you and want it fixed for free even though you told them there is no warranty on this repair. All this makes both you and the customer angry so many shops do not allow this to happen for these reasons. It is like a customer goes into a restaurant and hands the waitress 2 eggs and some bacon and says he wants this cooked but, he is not paying the $5 for the breakfast special, then refuses to pay because the eggs were bad.

  28. From someone who has done this: First things first Ray, before you start your own business, make sure your wife and family are all as committed as you are to this! Then get yourself a good business attorney and an accountant familiar with the automotive repair business. Then start talking to people who own and operate small businesses in the automotive field about what they went through when they first branched out on their own, i.e, what worked and what didn't work. Remember that the only thing that will trump your reputation as an automotive technician is location, location, location and a facility with good curb appeal. Also connect with a good and creative graphic design artist who can think outside the box, to help you with a business name, catchy graphics, business cards, flyers and signs. Develop two-way relationships with the vendors you will use, gas stations, and other repair shops. Be careful at the beginning, don't take on more than you alone can comfortably handle, either in debt, or the amount of work you will have to do. Being an owner and proprietor of a small business is much different than being an employee! I feel from your videos that you will do well. Also, make videos of everything while you get a personal business up and running smoothly. So many people will benefit from these business start-up videos. Good Luck!!

  30. My son and I were changing oil yesterday on two of our cars and he says I am watching too much of you. This was because I whipped the empty brake clean can across the floor and yelled another. However, it worked he quickly fetched me another can. Love your videos Ray. I use to be an aircraft mechanic but I have learned so much watching your videos.

  32. Hi Ray, I had an issue with a leak in my Honda Civic 2002 that would slowly empty the system after one week of filling it up. I replaced the condenser, receiver dryer and all o-rings several times. Multiple repair shops filled it up six or more times with refrigerant but the leak was still there. The last repair shop even tried leak detection with nitrogen. After almost one year I finally found the leak in the pressure switch which was leaking through the electronics part (plug). I have put a video with images on youtube where the dye is clearly visible inside the pressure sensor plug. The accord has the same pressure switch, might be a similar issue.

  38. Appreciated the discussion of lift safety. In a previous life I was the technology education supervisor for a high school in a large northern school district. The lessons on lift safety were constant. I also insisted on complying with the yearly inspection of the lift used in the shop. The lift was initially shut down for a week because it needed repairs immediately. The school principal was incensed that money had to be spent on completely "unnecessary" repairs. The shop teacher was so happy as he had complained of the lift for years. Another problem were the students who just couldn't absorb how dangerous the lift could be when it was not used correctly.

  40. People are suspect of mechanics for the following reason: One bad experience with a truly malicious mechanic spreads. For every 10 good interactions there is that one guy....and no one ever tells a story if the ending is happy. This combined with the fact that most people don't understand ANYTHING about how a car works combines into the perfect scenario for distrust. Lack of understanding breeds fear, fear makes you believe anything you hear, what you hear about mechanics is only the bad interactions....not the thousand of good ones. It's the exact same phenomenon that perpetuates any stereotype. It's unfortunate but channels like this can slowly swing the tide as they provide an inside look at your perspective.

  43. In my opinion, the fact that you have video proof of no negligence makes a big difference. You can show the customer what happened, and let him or her make the decision of whether to replace or not. If it was broken because of negligence, then I'd expect it to be replaced free of charge.
