Years ago, (after finishing my meal) a small kid came out of the restaurant to grab my hand and said "Hey Chinese man, come home with us." His mom came running out to stop him, and scolded him that you can't do that with a stranger. That's when I realized that small children are inhabiting a parallel universe in which ALL things are possible.

  10. I was in China for about a year in 2016, and traveled all over the country. As a tall white guy, so many people talked about me…and they didn’t know I spoke Chinese. It was so fun eavesdropping on them. Same thing happened in Peru, it’s quite fun to call people out if they say mean things. Otherwise I’d just smile at them.

  25. The man that said "please carry on living in Japan" literally made me cry. As a foreigner I've heard the opposite sentence so many times in the place I was born and raised. "go back to your country". It was very wholesome to hear someone say something like that, and quite surprising too. I hope to meet people with this kind of mindset now that I moved to Japan. thanks for the great content.

As a Japanese person who was born and raised in Brazil, then moved to the USA, earned a USA citizenship through the military, then moved to Japan, I can say it firsthand that this is common around the world. In Brazil, I was never referred to as "Brasileiro" was "Japonês". In the USA, I was never Brazilian, I was Japanese. I finally gave up on trying to convince people that I was Brazilian and moved to Japan (Joking about this, but I did move to Japan). Regardless, in Japan, they don't refer to me as Brazilian or American, they just assume I am Japanese. I guess I ended up just coming full circle in the circle of ethnicity/nationality.

  37. My experience with speaking Chinese/Japanese: When you start learning/speaking with natives they will compliment you a lot. Once you actually reach a decent level, your native friends will start to tell you how shit you actually are.

  38. Kids are very fascinated with foreigners for sure. Keep in mind, about 90% of the population is Japanese and the rest are foreigners. When kids or even elderly see foreigners, they are sometimes surprised. I've even had times where an old woman will start randomly speaking to me in Japanese, it's pretty interesting haha. (keep in mind, I said about 90%. You don't need to message me telling me it's more, I was just estimating lol.)

  40. At first I thought things had changed in Japan when it came to mixed race people, I guess not. Although the young people you spoke to seemed pretty cool. When I was a child in Japan in 1955 my parents and I would take the bus into town, once in a while a man would ride that sat in a corner all by himself and looked scared. I asked my dad why that was and dad told me he was a child of a black service man and a Japanese lady and therefore was considered a social outcast. I felt so bad for the man.

  43. I speak Tagalog, Bisaya and Waray. I’ve seen a few prank videos of white people speaking 12 or so different languages and whenever they speak to Filipinos I could barely understand them because they’re accent was so bad. It was painfully obvious they had only memorized a few sentences.

  46. No way!!! Is that Aju? One of the kindest Japanese woman I have met during my travels in Japan. I met her last year at Weerasakrack Muay Thai gym in Tokyo, September 2023 during our Muay Thai training session and she acted as a translator for me to a tradesperson working at the gym which then led onto having a really great unforgettable conversation with her before I had to dash to DisneySea. I was thinking about her before YouTube algorithm recommended me this videos and instantly recognised her on the thumbnail.
