  3. I'm Japanese American and lived in Japan a few years ago. American tourists would assume that I'm Japanese and talk about me. It was funny to see their reaction when I spoke to them in English. One time I ran into an older couple that was lost. The wife, exasperated, exclaimed, "I wish somebody around here spoke English!" When I answered, "how can I be of assistance?", she jumped back like she saw a ghost. Good times. :D

  14. The people say they are scared because they are so comfortable saying bad things about others without any recourse. When I was teaching, I had 2 Iranian students say awful things, including derogatory words, about a patient that was gracious enough to allow students to learn from his suffering. I hauled them out and told them to never speak anything but English in front of a patient. They told me they didn't say anything bad (in Farsi). Then I repeated what they said. They went a little pale. It's a massive sign of disrespect in this situation

  15. When I was in Japan a few years ago, absolutely no Japanese people paid attention to me, which, as a afro American, kinda surprised me. The Chinese tourists, however, wanted me to pose for pictures with them for no reason. One guy put his arm around me and said "Kobe!" Lmao I look like Kobe Bryant the same way Paul Rudd looks like Charlie Sheen. šŸ˜‚

  20. "Cultural appropriation" has become a buzzword, detached from the problem it originally described. Originally it expressed a phenomenon where people of the dominant ethnicity "appropriate" clothes and hairstyles from minority ethnicities, but at the same time shame minority ethnicities for dressing in an "ethnic way". Like White Americans who use Native American accessories for fashion, but would laugh at a Native for doing the same. That's why it was called "appropriation"- "taking away" by shaming, while simultaneously making a fashion statement. A person doesn't "appropriate" Japanese culture just by virtue of dressing Japanese or eating Japanese food. Because the word isn't about hobbies, it's about social dynamics between majority and minority. When said person even lives in Japan and IS part of the minority ethnicity, accusing her of "appropriation" is nonsensical.

I love how kids often are basically like, you are fat or sometimes might even say you are ugly or something that might seem harsh, but they will still want to get to know you, they will still be your friend. They accept you the way you are unconditionally. They arent subjective yet, they see you as is AND take you as is. (Which ironically is how you develop your subjective views you have later in life)

  23. i think the paranoia of other people talking bad about you mainly only happens when you are monolingual i've lived in a country where foreigners stand out so much and i've yet to hear anyone around me criticize them openly in public or when i travel and i hear people speak spanish, japanese, etc. i highly doubt they're talking bad about me you can easily tell from body language the way how they do gestures when talking is a telling sign its very common in america, you meet a lot of monolingual americans and they're obsessed with the ideology that the whole world revolves around them (one time i was asking my mom on the phone what type of napkins she wants in tagalog and it so happens i made eye contact with someone at target, this karen started screaming at me and told a worker i was harassing her wild isn't it lol)

  26. Doing this in Germany is always fun. You can speak perfect German to someone and they'll respond in perfect English, almost completely ignoring the fact that you're speaking German. It's either due to wanting to be a good host, or that many Germans are quite confident that their English is better than your German lol

I myself discovered the magic of language learning and dedicated myself to learning Spanish. Travel becomes so much more exciting and was well rewarded by smiles and friendship. The locals of Latin America love to see a Chino who trying hard to speak their language.

When I worked as a cashier at an Express clothing store, this mother and daughter weren't talking about me, but about the clothes the daughter was going to purchase (she looked like she was in her late teens). They were speaking in Spanish, thinking I couldn't understand them. In Spanish the mom says, "Vas a comprar esos? (You're going to buy those?!)" The daughter responds "Si? (yeah?)" To which the mom asks while kinda gesturing towards me, "Que? Quieres enseƱar lo tus chichis? (What? You want to show him your titties?)" That caught me so off guard that I started laughing. They both look at me, and the mom asks me in English, "Oh you speak spanish?" So I respond in Spanish, "Si, mi mama ere de Guatemala. (Yeah, my mom is from Guatemala)." The mom does this little chuckle and says "oops" to her daughter while her daughter hung her head in embarrassment. That will forever be one of my favorite interactions with customers.

  33. Yes, Japanese, Korean, and other east asians have a reputation of being unfriendly toward foreigners. From personal experiences, I do agree that they are friendlier but it depends on who you are and what you look like too. That's the same in the US or anywhere else in the world. Being a tall and attractive blond female who can speak Japanese will definitely get strangers to open up quickly to you. Others who don't quite fit this profile won't get the same kind of reception, unfortunately.

  44. My son grew up as a bilingual (Chinese/German). Nevertheless as an infant it was difficult for him to switch quickly between these two languages and it was impossible for him to translate. That changed when he was around 6 years old. A funny experience was a visit to the U.S. when he was five. He tried to speak German to his US/Chinese cousin and she tried to speak English to him. It took me quite a while to convince both children that they need to speak Chinese to each other. Finally they switched to Chinese and I was no longer part of this conversation.
