  3. Some days ago I was in the subway and there were two japanese boys who sit next to me and talked to me in my language. But sometimes they talked to each other in japanese and they talked about ME. When I exited the subway I told them in japanese that I understood everything and wished them a good day but that was so awkward 😂😩

  4. I had an interesting experience. I had been in Japan for about 2 years and was visiting Tokyo to renew my Visa. I had to stay in a hostel in Ikebukuro. In the evening I was sitting with some tourists. One guy was from the US with his Japanese American girlfriend (nisei) and there was this girl from Europe. She had basic Japanese down but was claiming to know more than me. I didn't call her out on it. I let it slide. So I asked her how many languages do you speak? She said that in Europe most people can speak multiple languages. I speak French, English, Swiss and German. The American guy asks "You speak German?" looking surprised. The girl was so proud of the fact she is a polygot and said yes. And he asked, at what level? She said, University level. Then the American guy started speaking absolutely fluent German... and it sounded so cool. Apparently he was from a military family and he had lived in Germany for about 10 years as a child. He was just so excited to be able to speak with someone in German. And the so called Polygot girl from Europe couldn't understand a word of what he said (because he spoke so fluently and at a natural speed, it was too quick for her to pick up) and she had to admit her German was that of a 4 year old. She thought she was safe boasting among us simple Americans and Australians... no way did she expect that the American guy spoke fluent German. It was the coolest thing I have ever seen. So you never know. Best policy is to be honest about your abilities.

  7. I like how she said "if you can speak up its not that bad" if that isn't the truth... yea I hear so much horrible things. However if you guys notice they are often coming from people that didn't speak up for themselves. People tried to bully me in China for being a black foreigner , LOL I showed them and became a popular local Chinese folk dancer lmao. When you are different or even if you aren't different, you need to have confidence, don't let the sour lemons of life constantly put you down.

  12. I speak 3 Asian languages, Mandarin, Japanese, and Thai, at a conversational level. One time, ONE TIME, I was at a beach party in eastern Taiwan and I found myself talking with a group that included a local (Chinese speaker), a Japanese, and a Thai visitor. That I could speak to all 3 of them in their languages, telling a little about myself, where I studied their languages, and what I was doing in Taiwan probably made me look unreal. That there were speakers of all 3 languages I speak, and no native speakers of anything I didn't speak, probably made it look like I was some kind of language master. That exact combo has never happened since.

  13. Yeah, besides his perfect Japanese it's apparent he grew up in Japan because he really knows how to be "silly" with Japanese school children. IMHO one of the most beautiful things about Japanese children is that they still retain some of their immaturity without being forced to grow up too soon like in the West.

  17. The best reaction me and my friends got EVERYTIME we came across schoolchildren in Japan, was about our height. We are all around 190cm, which meant we pretty much towered over everyone there. The kids would look up to us in awe and start saying 'Woah, se ga takai!!', which was the funniest thing.

  24. When I was traveling in Xi'an with my mom, she overheard a woman speaking German and so started speaking German with them and through the conversation learned that she actually had stayed with the woman's family 40 years before in Germany when was an exchange student.

  25. As a black person looking at his facial features it's immediately apparent that he's mixed race. lol Lots of non mixed black people have an Asiatic eye shape, but for him it's not just the eye shape, it's almost all of his facial features that strongly hint at Asian ancestry.

  26. It's the pronunciation that does it. Some people are just naturally good at pronouncing sounds that don't exist in their native language. Other people aren't. I remember watching an American diplomat speak German on German TV and his pronunciation was horrible... but he knew all sorts of words I had never heard before. Having knowledge on that level shows the amount of effort that was put into learning the language.

  27. Congrats from a stranger on the internet! I'm sorry you didn't have your family there for the big day but it looked like a beautiful ceremony anyway. My little sister got married to a Japanese guy a few years back and the mixture of Scottish and Japanese customs was great fun, He wore a kilt for the ceremony and she wore a ceremonial kimono for the reception, whole thing was really cute. Two countries with a strong drinking culture though so got a bit messy after that!

  29. The funny thing is for me as an Australian, I can easily see and hear that this man is Japanese, even though I don't speak Japanese. His posture, hand gestures, mannerisms are all very much the same as Japanese tourists/students I have met here in Australia or seen on t.v/movies. His English also has a slight Japanese accent to it.

  30. I really love how confident you are especially in situations that might be a little uncomfortable, you laugh it off or take hold of it and turn it into something positive! I guess you have to grow a certain level of confidence living in a different country and learning new languages, being amongst locals where you stand out. It’s really fascinating

  35. My wife was born in the Philippines. She had a filipina friend who was married to a Japanese guy that was temporarily working at a car parts plant here in the USA. One day we were helping them move and her friend was spinning in circles talking to her husband in japanese, my wife in tagalog and me in english. I was just in awe that she could do that. I really envy people like this that can speak multiple languages. Very impressive! Congratulations on your hard work.

  44. For those wanting to go to Japan to teach English, being a native doesn't make you a teacher. It's not the lazy way into a foreign country. If you are serious about teaching English at least get some books on how to teach EFL and particularly on the differences between the language your pupils will speak and the one you will be teaching cause that changes the approach.
