  23. @Kyplanet893  I was comparing the probabilities between the resonance system existing up discovery and j14o7b holding on to its rings while entering and exiting the system. As for the j1407 being a brown dwarf due to it holding the rings for long periods of time. It a bit of an assumption to say that j1407b to have had rings/disk for a geological long time. This point is also weaken by the argument of it being a rough object, that spends most of its time in the void, with very little gravitional interactions with other large mass objects, and would hold on to the rings/disk for a far longer period of time then if it was in a solar system. With the only issues being when they passby/enter a solar system. Though that would effect both a planet and a brown dwarf. We also don't have a full grasp of how the rings looked to tell confidently say what state they where in, with the transient method being rather narrow(?) in its presentation of data, with it only showing the changes across a horizontal axis/pov.

  24.  @Mr_Topek  There’s no reason we should ever need to search the stars for planets humans can live on. By the time we have the technology to actually get there, it’d be far easier to build habitats in space or on nearby planets.

  25. ​ @Kyplanet893 there is no commercial value to colonizing/mining off world at this time. Anywhere you go requires recreating the Earth's environment in order for mam to survive. This requires a tremendous amount of resources be spent up front establishing the environment. And what is the payback on the backend? It's like the production costs for antimatter. So that leaves sending robots to the moon, Mars, asteroid belt for exploration and mining activities. But just what is being mined? Minerals to build a space station? That means some sort of processing plant in space which then requires more energy. Unless you can find a cheap, abundant energy source in space to energize your activities, your space programs won't get off the ground. The nation's of Earth aren't going to reduce their energy usage in exchange for a few space tokens.

  30. Couldn't J1407b just be something that just happens every 200 or 250 years? I'm not a physicist or anything but couldn't it be a clump of asteroids and dwarf planets or something along those lines, with an extremely long orbital period?

  32.  @Kyplanet893  they can play with other people on base and self-host their servers. Playing with people on Earth was always going to be impossible, because of light speed delay. Alternatively, they can just accept that living on Mars requires some sacrifices. I'm sure that never again seeing their family or walking through a forest or feeling the wind on their faces would hit far harder than not being able to play Call of Duty with your discord buddies on Earth.
