  2. I am so grateful that I learned about Wu from the Extra History team first instead of some warped pop-culture interpretation of her. Although I always love learning about popular historical or mythological characters such as Vlad the Impaler, Rasputin, or Hercules, if I’m first exposed to them through popular culture (which almost always takes millions of liberties in regards to historical accuracy), that’s what I always think of first. Whenever I have to write about them for whatever reason, I have to constantly fight a mental war with myself to remember, no, Vlad the Impaler was not an immortal vampire who tried to eat a Victorian lawyer, Rasputin was not a spiteful sorcerer who sold his soul for a demonic reliquary to curse the Romanovs, and Hercules had way too much anger issues to be considered Superman in Ancient Greece. Because of this series, I will think of Wu Zetian as a cunning, manipulative, power-grabbing master of political intrigue and seduction (which I admit is not the most flattering view). However, I won’t remember her as some unhinged, megalomaniacal psycho-bitch who was murderously evil for its own sake and justified excluding women from positions of power and authority. I had never heard the name Wu Zetian before her name came up on the Patreon poll, but you’d better believe that will never forget that name now that I’ve finished this series, and I’ll never think of her as the heartless demon empress her enemies tried to cast her as. This was a fantastic series, and I look forward to watching the Lies Episode.

  10. Thomas-Alexandre Dumas was actually the father of Alexandre Dumas, the famous author and playwright who wrote The Three Musketeers. Dumas Sr’s story is actually pretty tragic, but it might get covered in a later part of the series so I won’t say.

  19. Wow, learning that about Dick's life really does contextualize all his work. I have read "Do Androids Dream", "Ubik", and "In a Scanner Darkly" and that information changes all of them. I guess this is an instance where "death of the author" is less possible because Dick's world view permeates so much of his material.

One thing left out in this episode is that he single-handedly drafted the Massachusetts Constitution, which is not only the longest-living constitution in history, but also provided a template for the US Federal Constitution.   44. Watched a YouTube video by NaShan Clay recently on how much damage the no crying rule does to young people. When you aren't allowed to vent your feelings through tears, you vent them through anger. And when you aren't allowed to show or cope with emotions, but have to bottle them up inside up, they build up over time instead of healing.

  48. This video pretty much explains why I think Norse mithlolgy is a LOT better then Greek mithlolgy. Not only is their actual drama here, but the Norse gods actually have to deal with the problems their actions cause. Most of the conflict in Greek mithlolgy pretty much boils down to "Zues didn't keep it in his pants again." with the Greek gods NEVER having to face what they have allowed to happen just because their gods.
