  1. I was raised Seventh-day-Adventist and we were taught this story as gospel over and over, (though from a rather different point of view.) I used to confuse the Great Disappointment with the Great Depression. After the events in this video, the Seventh-day-Adventists explained that on October 22nd, 1844, God had moved from one chamber into another, and had begun the final judgement of humanity. Like so many other things in the Bible, this didn't exactly make sense considering the fact that they were teaching that God was everywhere and had always been judging people, but they explained the last part as, "well now he's judging people even more!" and they sent me to the corner for questioning them. I was in trouble a lot in my religious grade school.

  10. So a HUGE thank you for covering this. As an orthodox jew it's fascinating to see how they get interpreted by other cultures. A couple minor things: being a nazirite wasn't a "life sentence" generally. The minimum period was 30 days, after which you bring an offering to the temple as part of the ceremony to cut and burn the hair. Samson was a unique case in that he wasn't as restricted as a standard nazirite - he was only DIRECTLY restricted from the hair cutting, even though his mother was told to refrain from all the other nazirite aspects. As such, it's not clear whether he was in fact prohibit from contact with the dead or consumption of wine. All that aside, Samson is never held up as an upstanding citizen. If anything, he's sort of a jewish antihero, the Hebrew Batman, if you will...

  13. Honestly, in northwestern Spain and Portugal we have a very similar myth to the Wild Hunt, but also very distinct. The Santa Compaña. (Or Holy Company) They are a processions of the deceased in white garbs. Whose job, sometimes, is to go around villages to collect the souls of the recently deceased to travel with them. In which case, if you cross pathes with them or watch them from your window, you might see the face of a neighbour of yours between them, only for you to learn the next morning that he died during his sleep. But other times, if you are unlucky enough to find them in your way during the night, they will make you carry the cross as head of the procession. In which case, you better pray you find another living person on your path, to whom you can pass the cross in your place. Because if not, before morning arrives, they will take you with them to the other side.

  14. Holy shit. I honestly can't describe how much I love your videos. I personally love history, but I've noticed that friends who I've showed videos of yours to them, liked them as well. Literally last weekend, I had a friend over and I showed him the entire Ned Kelly story. After, I asked if he liked it, and he said he loved it, and wanted to watch more. You make history so accessible and can make people I'd never heard of some of my personal heroes, like John Snow. You also have the magic to make me interested in something I'd never even thought about. It pains me to see the end of the video, knowing I'd have to wait another week to get the next part. I can't wait for #4.

(Comment from Belinda) I don't know if anyone else has had this experience with Jane Austen's works, but in the educational culture I grew up in, the historical context of Austen's writing was almost never emphasized. Pride & Prejudice in particular is frequently reduced to being the original formula for romantic comedies (to say nothing of its own spin-off movies of the same name). I remember in high school class it seemed really weird to me that we would be talking about this 19th century novel as a progressive feminist work because it's already a given in the 21st century world that marrying for love is extremely commonplace. I'm really proud of our writers Jac and Rob, and our artist Ali, for bringing to life the "extra History" of Jane Austen that gets glossed over by popular culture. <3

  27. Southern slavery expansionism is worthy of its own series. Both William Walker’s and Narciso López’s filibustering in Nicaragua and Cuba respectively had the eventual goal of being annexed by the US as slave states, a la the Texas Revolution. López asked both Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee to lead expeditions to overthrow the Spanish government in Cuba. They declined but it didn’t stop them from trying to do the same thing later on with their own government.

  32. As a Dutchmen qualified in history, I have to say this video is very wrong about the Dutch Republic obtaining its wealth from the VOC. In fact, the VOC wasn't very significant until the 18th Century. What made the Dutch Republic such an economic powerhouse was the trade with the Baltic. The Wheat trade was still by far the largest in Europe and the Dutch economic system (which was way ahead of its time) was especially prevelent in the trade with the Baltic, not with the East Indies. It's a very common misconception, but I feel like this is important enough to point out as it disproves a lot of points about 17th Century trading all being about spices.

  35. With a lot of mythology there will be a ton of different versions. I tried to remain as faithful as I could to the most common threads. That's usually how EM is going to operate but I totally encourage everyone to check out all the alternate versions of these stories as the deviations sometimes provide amazing insights into how these cultures changed! -JP

  36. Song Jiaoren is one of the most underrated revolutionaries in Modern Chinese History. While Sun was the diplomat, Huang Xing the military man, it was Song who was the organizer of the Revolution. Most of the soldiers who revolted in Wuchang actually admired Song more than Sun, and this is why he was chosen by the Kuomintang over Sun to lead them against Yuan. If he was not gunned down by Yuan on that fateful day at such a young age, it is probably he who would remember as the founder of the Republic and there is a good chance he maybe able to hold China together which would spare the nation a lot of bloodsheds. For anyone who is interested in learning more about the Revolution and Song's life. I would recommend them looking up the following book: Struggle for democracy: Sung Chiao-jen and the 1911 Chinese Revolution (1971) published by ANU.

Sad that it took this kind of disaster to enact any kind of reform though, as I understand it things were like this for pretty much the entire Industrial Revolution to this point. Also that little bit at the end has so many applications today :^)

When he died, those parishoners made a pilgrimage to retrieve hia body, but ran out of water on the way and asked for his intervention. Legend holds that their water containers then filled with beer that lasted them the rest of the journey.

As a life long type-1 diabetic who has seen advances from taking 2 types of insulin and have little flexibility in my life, all the way to being on a closed loop Constant Glucose Monitor and an insulin pump that communicate through my smartphone and dynamically adjust my insulin rate based on my current glucose levels, I just want to say thank you. I learned a lot I didnt know about the discovery of insulin, and I'm especially thankful you bring up the legal loophole that has allowed companies to make mind-boggling amounts of profit off a medication that is required for people to live.
