I heard a theory that blue eyed people could have more likelihood of passing on their gene to future offspring by selecting for other blue eyed mates. Since blue eyes stem from a recessive gene, both parents sharing that gene should produce a blue eyed progeny.

One of the Egyptian king's mummy has red hair. Ramses maybe?

Love his accent!
22
something I picked up on was the language. Galician for I love you is apparently Querote, in Welsh it's Caru ti. There are no other similar expression for I love you, when you look at European languages as a whole.. definitely at least a slim linguistic connection there.
22
The Irish could certainly differentiate between Danes and Norwegians, as they gave the Danes names like Doyle (Black) for the black haired Danes as opposed to the blonde haired Norwegians.

Great vid, sir. Very balanced and informative. I'm also fascinated by the idea that the Vikings may have increased the rate of blue and gray eyes in the ME, which is where I'm from. It is plausible. But I just want to add that Lebanese and Syrians in particular have had the genes for blue eyes long before the Vikings had sailed and traded in the region. (Probably since the early Iron Age, according to recent genetic studies).

Wow! Which part of Scotland are you from my friend? Do you speak Scots Gaelic? I studied Irish Gaelic for a year at UCLA. You have a very strong accent, but as I listen carefully, I'm able to understand about 95% of what you say š Thanks for all your hard work on the channel!

Iām 6ft 3inch tall, have blue eyes, red hair, and Iām originally from the Scottish Highlands. My name is also āWillieā. I think I fit every āTeuchterā stereotype⦠even the squirrels and cows up there are ginger š

Thanks for the video! I'm from Antwerp in (now) Flanders, Belgium. Most of my family came from the West of Flanders, apart from a grandmother of Dutch (Holland) origin. I didn't take any genetic test. Most of today's Netherlands consisted of continually and drastically changing river beds up and well into the Roman period. When the Romans conquerred Gaul, they established the Northern border to what today's border between French and Flemish/Duttch languages are spoken. When the Franks came to Gaul they assimilated their language with Celtic leading to Dutch, or with Latin, leading to French. In the 16th cenury half of the population (Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent etc.) fled to Holland due to the religious persecutions done by the Spanish. Not only the protestants, but also free-minded people were persecuted. In (the South of) the Netherlands you'll find both Catholic and Lutheran churches close to each other.

I was born in Scotland and all my mom's family are Scottish and Irish, my biological father was of Spanish and Native American descent with all of his relatives being in the American southwest. I have black hair and hazel eyes my husband has dark brown hair and brown eyes, our son has dark brown hair and hazel eyes and his wife has dark brown hair and brown eyes their son, my grandson has red hair and blue eyes with very fair skin. Needless to say we were all quite surprised when he was born.

I can trace my ancestry back to the Ross Clan 1650 when a battle was lost to Cromwell. My ancestor survived, was captured, and brought to the U.S. as an indentured servant. It would be fun to learn more about Ross Clan origins!

Green eyes here. 100% British heritage confirmed by DNA test. Mostly English but Scots and Welsh ancestry too. Green is also my favorite colour by far. Greetings from sunny Florida.

My take away is that Gleesonās character had traveled in his lifetime, had musical talent , was exposed to other possibilities in his lifetime and here he was ending up living out his days on a remote uneventful Island. I believe he had lots of regret of how life had turned out for himself and that Farrellās simple character reflected this back to him. I do appreciate your insight of the significance of the old woman as the banshee that didnāt come to my mind watching the film because Iāve grown up with mention of the banshee being somewhat mythical and not amongst the living. It was a terrific performance by both of them especially Farrell?

Hazel eyes here with Spanish/Native American on my Mother's side. French/ Native on my Dads side. š

These comments are so insightful! I am so glad I visited here, it puts so much of this film in context. Thanks everyone

Conan O'Brien said his DNA test came back as 100% Irish despite his ancestors, as far as he knows, arriving in the US in the 1870s. It would be interesting to see how that company defined Irish though.
22
I have hazel eyes. One of my children has hazel eyes. My father had hazel eyes when I was young but his eyes have changed color. My dad is in his 80's, he's very healthy and physically fit. His eyes have slowly changed color and are now very light translucent grey blue. Our ancestry is predominately British/Scottish.

The Templars were disbanded by the Pope and Bruce was excommunicated by the Pope. The Templars seeking refuge in Scotland would make sense because Bruce had no need to worry about offending the Pope by allowing them to do so.
22
I absolutely love your accent. Top notch. Very informative and comprehensive content. šā„ļøšµš¹

I've been immersed in Irish culture and lore for a couple of years now tor a project. Watched this film a couple of weeks ago. I can't remember when a film had such a deep impact on me. Knocked the words right out of me.

Iām Scotās/Irish on my fatherās side and Anglo/ Welsh on my motherās ,I joined a geology society and looked up my family tree and was amazed at how intertwined our four home nations are, but it blows my mind to think if you go back a 1000 years theoretically youāve got 1 billion ancestors, when the population of Europe was only 56 million ! š“ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó “ó æ

3:11 One thing that we (Portugal) got for sure from the Celtics is the level of appreciation we can still have for a few good drinks when there's a party XD ... for a good reason Lusus (the supposed son or companion of Baco) was "THE" God that gave name to Lusitânia/Lusitani XD

Hazel eyes here. Mom had the most beautiful blue eyes I've ever seen, dad's were practically black. I have what I call mood eyes. More green or brown depending on the day and what color top I'm wearing.

Hello brother redhead. My family comes from Ireland and Scandinavia. I appreciate the work that you put into this! Itās very interesting to find out about where we come from throughout history. Thank you.
21
One of my siblings has brown eyes, the other has blue eyes, one parent had brown, the other had blue.....I always thought mine were just a messy mix of everything, now I realise Hazel isn't so bad.

In northern part of Anatolia , as south part of Black sea , in modern Turkey , many people has blue eyes and blond hair, another proof of your theory

My great grand parents are from Glasgow. They emigrated to the USA in the 1930s. They brought with them my grand aunt and grand uncle. Also went back a year later for my 2nd great grandfather. My grand father was born a few years after their arrival to the USA. Now they are all resting in multnomah Oregon where they are burried. My DNA test came back with 54% Scottish for myself. Quite happy with that. Clan HAY.

That would make far more sense to my dna! My highest deep dive match to an ancient sample is that of a Scythian warrior dating to 1813 BC. My dad is 52% Scottish, 12% Irish and 5% Welsh the rest being North Western Europe. I'm 48% Welsh, 12% Scottish and 11% Irish, the rest again as North Western Europe š

I dye my hair lighter red but have naturally auburn colouring hair with light blue eyes. Im from England but ancestry from southern Scotland with some from Scandinavia too. My mam was blonde & blue eyed. Great video āØthanks for sharing.

I loved the film and enjoyed the video that highlights McDonaghās use of the Banshee. I also had noted the name of the island as The Island of Ireland. A masterful film, saturated with the the strange twisted light of, perhaps, the dimension of the banshee and the haunting attraction and fear of death. Spoiler: What Colm would use to play music, he destroysālike the saying, āheād cut off his nose to spite his face.ā

The other powerful "she" in the story is the sister...She is sensitive and sensible enough to leave the island (hell), and she is friends with the old lady/death. When the latter waves her to approach from the other side of the lake, she doesn't go. She is wise and compassionate.
21
I always thought that some people from the Iberian-Peninsula specifically to those from Northern-Spain look sometimes like they have some Scottish or ancient celtic ancestry. I know that Portugal has it, but Northern-Spain genetics still prevail in that area until today.
21
I am a Robertson and love visiting Scotland. I am familiar with my ancestral lands and have been there a few times. I plan to come in May to visit the borderlands. My guide is a Campbell .

1:00 Wales is also mountainous. So they're sheltered from any genetic influence. The Welsh are descendants of British Beaker folk and 10% Stone age survivors. They're genetically detached from any population. Including Celts and Romans. Conquest doesn't mean genetic influx of course.
21
i think, aside from the details and the wrangling about terms like saxon and celt (i mean to be fair we havent had a celtic or saxon culture in britain for a millenium), that the natives of the British Isles are more alike than unalike. And that to me, as someone with Irish, Scots, English and Welsh in me, and a proud unionist, is encouraging
21
Im 95% Gael origin. Born on Tyneside. Im a Celt and i approve of this wonderful video. āļøš

One characteristic of beanshees is wailing. This is thought to have arisen from foxes howling at night

My father was blonde pale blue eyes, and pale skinned. I did my DNA test and I have swedish and Danish, Scottish. Right on š

I visited Forres 5 years ago and saw personally the, Pictish ā Suenos Stonesā they were impressive and encased in glass boxes and were about 12 foot tall!
21
My mother-in-law who was 100% Swedish had blonde hair, blue eyes and was 5'10" in height. My paternal male line has origins in Norway and was over 6 foot tall with blue eyes and blonde hair. I am originally from Indiana, USA.
21
I read the other day that there were thousands Celts in Egypt in the 3rd century BC living there as mercenaries. Apparently they were involved in a military coup against one of the Ptolemy kings and got surrounded on an island in the Nile. They all committed ritual suicide rather than be taken alive.
21
One explanation for the grey blue & green eyes in the Middle East I heard just the other day on a podcast was that Vikings would capture women from Northern Europe to be traded in the Middle East to be used in harems etc. not sure how accurate that is but itās one theory Iāve heard
21
I am mostly Scottish, but my father's paternal grandfather was from north Wales (Cymru). I feel strong affinity for both sides. My Powell-Jones became Presbyterian and mixed with other Presbyterians, who were a mix of Highlanders like Sutherland, Cameron, MacDonald, and Lowlanders: Snodgrass, Montgomery, McRea. I love learning about my roots.
