  1. A couple things to mention: taste (particularly our sense of sweet and salty) is diminished at altitude, presumably at low ambient air pressure - which is why we think food is bland in the air. For this reason, airplane food regularly has extra salt added to it to give the food "more" flavor, to offset that effect. Try eating an airline meal when you're on the ground, it's unbearably salty. Second, I regularly use my cell phone when flying my plane - it's useful to pull up weather or other information, and for use as an emergency backup. In my experience, it works reliably up to about 3500 or 4000 feet - and then only when near a built-up area. Above 4000 feet or so, the connection is so unreliable as to be useless.

  3. Team up with practical engineering! Oh, do something fun with your wife or kids that we can do with our kids. Maybe do a series of videos that teaches basic physics for kids. Also, being a dad changes you. It changes your values, your brain, your life. It's not just you. Your struggles to do something you love while not being good and having a gift in another area is not uncommon. Many take the bad advice of doing what you love and fail miserably with no way to sustain themselves. You did the smart thing. It's exactly the route I suggest young people take (tough I never say it's the only way).

  13. I had to add some constructive criticism since Ive been watching veritasium for years now, and you said yourself you spent 2+ years working on this film. I found the "musical numbers" really did not work well in the context of the film. I understand why you put them in (kids) but even so, no where in the tone of the trailer did you elude that would be part of the movie, and for a serious documentary it just came off corny. If thats what you were going for so be it. Enjoyed the film other then those parts

I grew up in Khartoum, Sudan, I graduated in a degree in Medicine and Surgery last year, although I love medicine, but surprisingly I love art too, and I wanted to be a photographer/filmmaker, so guess what? I started to be make videos about interesting topics in medicine and science on YouTube (in Arabic language with English subtitles for now), and I'm kinda loving it, having a job as a doctor definitely makes it harder to make videos, but I will never stop.   25. Delightful. Typically, I know something about the topics Derek covers in his video, but not this one. I've played in snow and seen pictures of snowflakes, I never thought about how they formed. It was just wonderful watching this video -- such high quality -- and hearing the detailed explanations.   31. When you showed me the picture of Europa took by Voyager 1, it genuinely brought a tear to my eyes. Humans have gone such a long way from making fire to launching spacecrafts to other worlds. One of the biggest reasons i wanted to become an astronaut when I was little. This video was so emotional to me, thanks Derek!
