  1. Debian, I tested it out 8 years ago and stayed with it, not much reason to change once you're somewhere nice. The 'cool linuxing' part is now when installing the latest stuff, but that's more exciting than package dependency fixes. Happy you're back, really good videos.

  3. Manjaro has come a long way. This Nvidia workaround doesn't seem to be needed anymore. You can select the nonfree at installation boot and it will use them throughout and they will work flawlesslu. Of course, it will disable Wayland if it detects the proprietary drivers but that's far from a bad thing. Been a great experience for me so far.

  6. When I moved from Gnome, KDE just blew my mind. Everything seemed so easy and intuitive. I also had used Windows, macOS (rarely), a lot of Gnome, Cinnamon and a bit of Mate and XFCE. KDE (for me) turned out to be the best. And now I know why. I started developing an app for Plasma (btw, check it out: https://github.com/OneAdder/libinput_gestures_qt ) and Qt is so cool. I mean I managed to do something (not perfectly polished yet though) for a couple of days. And I had never seen Qt before

Honestly I use Debian on all my work machines (I have 6 of them now, 1 desktop-server, 1 desktop, 2 test beds, 1 laptop and Dell PowerEdge R715) I run CentOS 8 Stream as bare metal on server and Debian on VM. I cannot even imagine running arch on anything serious. I am part this stage. My OS must work no matter what. Stability is my first order of business (I run ECC RAM in all Desktops and Registered ECC in server). I even would sacrifice a lot of speed for stability.

  10. I had problems with my touchpad on other distros, even on Windows. After playing with ElementaryOS, Ubuntu, LinuxMint Cinnamon, ZorinOS i have finally found my one and true love- Manjaro KDE.

  14. 10:35 usr is better thought of as universal system resources. The connection to "user" is mostly historic (used to contain user home directories like /home/ does now.) Nowadays, It's shared by all users, generally isn't user-writeable, and should only be modified via the package manager. (Custom apps belong in /usr/local/bin/ ; users can install into ~/.local/bin/ ) In some distros like Arch, /bin/ & /sbin/ are just symlinked to /usr/bin/ , as specified in file-hierarchy.7 for systemd.

This seems really cool....One of the biggest issues I have had when trying to see if I could use Linux as my main OS is it's seemingly random self destruction sometimes after trying to run package or OS updates that that the OS itself has prompted me to run...I have tried about 5 serious times to see if I could replace Windows with Linux...The cycle goes like this..1: Curiosity....2: Carefully taking the time to research which one of the brazillion distros out there would be best for me...3: Install it onto it's own partition....4: Fight and struggle to get drivers so I can get everything to work properly.....5: Start to customize to my liking......6: Get to where I am thinking that maybe I could use it full time....7: Run random update which breaks everything.....8: Get frustrated and give up on Linux for a while...Rinse and repeat....Going to try this out now..I am hoping this will install to a VirtualBox machine so I can test it out without too many headaches...Here I go again :)

  27. One word: stability I use Ubuntu because I like stability and I do Web Dev work so I need a supported system, and Ubuntu is still the closest to mainstream Linux system. Anything outside of a Debian based system is for people who want to feel special for using Linux. Also, before some nerd @s me. If you think Ubuntu is spyware but have a Google account, Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft account, or use a smart phone then you are LARPing as hackerman and are a hypocrite. Ubuntu needs to know the hardware setup of some sample of users so theu can optimize their operating system for their actual users. It is a good thing and I am happy to tell them I am using a ThinkPad from 2012 with an upgraded processor, RAM, and two SSDs. (gotta love that old thinkpad style, i don’t need a dvd drive in 2020, so i swapped the disk drive out for a second SSD) I am probably not the only one using older hardware and Canonical having that info tells them ”hey, we need to make sure this will run on older hardware”

  28. I have been running linux for years and I still distro hop once or twice a year. I just like seeing how other people are doing things and different solutions to similar problems. I may be staying on gentoo for a while though. I'm liking it a lot

  30. Since Windows applications are not secure, you should create a separate user account and run them like that, just so they don't have access to your home folder. Other than that, great tutorial!

  31. You can also do this one-time, with the following command in the terminal: pactl load-module module-echo-cancel source_name=noechosource sink_name=noechosink and once your recording is done, you can turn it back off, with pactl unload-module module-echo-cancel

If I understand correctly, Nix sets the Unix timestamp to 0 so that folders are more byte-by-byte compatible and thus can be shared via hydra. https://nixos.org/manual/nix/stable/#ch-relnotes-0.7 Still new to nix terminology, but basically I think it reduces variance (which could change the hash, making it harder to distirbute).

  34. Wow! I really like the direction Fedora is going. It isn't just your typical distro that's for sure. They obviously put a lot of thought into the underlying structure of the OS and how Flatpacks and RPM's are integrated. Your video really explained a lot in a very concise manner.   39. Very nicely explained video on what everything is and does. Just to touch note on the /dev/sdX you probably should of also addressed how drive names change based on what's connected to the system, the first standard SATA disk the system detects will be /dev/sda but if you connected another disk it would become /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc and so on. It cycles through each letter alphabetically for each connected drive and disk. Also something a little more newer on systems with new hardware like M.2/U.2 SSD's they'll appear something similar like this /dev/nvme0n1and /dev/nvme1n1 instead of the usual /dev/sdX naming scheme.

  42. Hey Dorian. KDE has a widget that you can download called "Places Widget" that you can put on your Task Bar. You can also try using the latte dock which is based on the KDE Frameworks if you want a dock on the side like Gnome.

  44. Fun fact, flatpak has the same commands as dnf or yum, so both update and upgrade works the same. It will always update remote repo meta first, then search or install the package you request. I suspect it uses dnf resolver as well, but I can't prove that.

  48. 8:35 btw..PLayonLinux is very outdated. You're probably better off using Lutris to manage your wine games ( if needs be..it depends on the individual game in my opinion as far as there are a few that you'll need to check a few boxes like " restore resolution on game exit" and " restore gamma on game exit" as well as "enable feral game mode" and "enable DXVK/VK3D" something like that. Some of the witcher trilogy is a good example of that as well as Metro 2033 I think IF anyone needs any help getting the same games I have set up on their Linux pc in which Lutris and wine both work on and are fairly new to Linux, I might be able to help.
