After some 15 years of using linux I guess its as good time as any to actually learn the linux file system structure :D
16
Crisp and clear, no shouting or whatsupping, no ums or errs, and enough info to enable me to use it with some confidence. Subscribed.

Linux actually let's you as an admin, delete all. Accidently to RM -R in the wrong place, and all is gone :) let us all appreciate that. Windows sux in this regard. "Please call your administrator... this file is in use by process etc, in use by Thrusted Installer etc...... , it's just terrible. ( for example try to delete files in freaky folder created by a Windows OS upgrade ). Tamper with the ownership, inherit the wrong things and you'll never be able to delete those files and folders any longer, no Technet article is gonna save you after you fucked up completely.

I don't need it now, I may never need it, but I'm really glad Rocky Linux exists, and it's impressive and such a joy to see how quickly it's gotten up and running after the CentOS debacle. It's very FOSS-affirming and I appreciate everyone involved and everyone supporting it with content like this getting the word out.
15
Good video rant, I think that the awareness of FOSS as a solution is more important for its growth than using it for everything, it takes a while to realise this, I am pretty sure all Linux and BSD users go though a stage of strictly using non proprietary software. I would say use the solutions that work for you, that have licencing terms you are comfortable with. Compromises do not have to be a bad thing, after all compromise is part of life

This is the best video about NixOS Iβve seen so far, thx for sharing your knowledge with usππ» It,s a very interesting conzept/ distro and I hope you will create a lot more content about NixOS. Keep up the good work mateππ»

Great job π I use mine all the time (Manjaro KDE + Wayfire) and I have to say that this is the most fun device I've had thus far. The community is amazing, plenty of people actively pursuing different projects and sharing with each other their findings. And they are ready to help anyone facing a problem regardless if it's big or small π Pine64 have made something truly amazing with the community and this laptop. The Pinebook Pro encourages it's user to learn and experiment. You can't go wrong with such device.

I know this video was made in 2017 however it is still very useful! Thanks so much! I laughed when you said "I'd love more followers" - I know i'm a couple years late but you just got another one!

Manjaro used to be my hit and miss. Then I was wanting a new Linux distro to try out as my college Linux distro, MX was my college distro because the Debian stable. Then I wanted a rolling distro that runs off the Arch branch but a little stable and that's when Manjaro came in. Manjaro gotten better, I liked Ubuntu's driverless printing but now Manjaro have their own driverless printing so I never have to mess with CUPS to get my printer working. Manjaro detected that I was running an Nvidia and Intel GPU and automatically installed the Bumblebee drivers because I told Manjaro to boot the nonfree drivers before installing.

Once again, I have to say, these videos you made were a god send. I've been wanting to get into the Gentoo world for a long time, but as you said, it was a bit intimidating at first. You explained things very very well, and I've successfully built 2 physical systems - the second of which with LVM and full disk encryption, using your vids as a guide. Awesome work. Any plans to make some other videos about some gentoo basics maybe, optimization or package management? Anything really XD

We came a long way from cumbersome compiling and installing source software to this. Linux is indeed the Master Race.
14
Cool distro! But if I remember correctly, they intend it more as a Gnome demo, than an actual operating system. So people shouldn't really be using it as their main OS. Something like Fedora Silverblue will probably work better for people wanting this kind of a system
14
Good to hear that you made it back home safe and sound with all that is going on and the new vid is a plus. :D
14
Gparted live! That's what I was missing, thanks so much! I'm trying to dual boot my system for windows/Mint, but I already have mint installed, and I was wondering about how I was going to keep the mint settings that I've already set without formatting and re-installing everything. Now I know how I can format and resize the partitions I need, cheers and thank you! :D

Im in the process of loading Linux onto my Mac wish me luck π©πΌβπ»

Thanks for the video. It is very helpful during the first installation. A brief explanation about the pkgs prefix. The configuration file is a method definition written in the language: https://nixos.org/nixos/nix-pills/basics-of-language.html#basics-of-language pkgs is one of the arguments declared at the top of the configuration file. The with expression imports all fields of argument into local context: https://nixos.org/nixos/nix-pills/basics-of-language.html#idm140737320566208 The with pkgs expression before a list definition means that you do not need to use the pkgs variable in the context of the list. You can write: environment.systemPackages = with pkgs; [vim, nano, xfce.xfce-whiskermenu-plugin] instead of environment.systemPackages = [pkgs.vim, pkgs.nano, pkgs.xfce.xfce-whiskermenu-plugin]

I like Debian. I'll stay with it. After 30+ years of messing around with various flavors of Unix, Fite-O-Net, Then OpenBSD. Then Linux starting with Red Hat. I find Debian to be the most stable, Ubuntu is my second choice. Main performance bottleneck is as always the Nvidia compatible video drivers. Nuff said. This will stop being fun when it gets ubiquitous like WinX and MacOS.

I'm not a Linux power user but I do programming pretty often and after a lot of distro hopping, finally found my way on POP OS, IMHO best GNOME implementation on Ubuntu Based distros. It uses 800-1.1gb RAM but it worthy in my case, no distraction, very productive, good performance, no cooling issues, no tearing, and bloatware free. I've tried most popular DE and deepin or stock GNOME are pretty good. I would've taken deepin DE instead, but I feel more comfortable using an Ubuntu Based distro and handling unofficial support of deeping DE is not my taste. Thanks for your review.

Excellent teacher. You go step by step at the correct speed. I learned a new important skill today.

People like that are the reason the stereotype of linux being only for nerds still exists. Most people don't care about semantics like this. They just want something that works, computers are appliances not temples. If they want more people to adopt free software they have to make it inviting not toxic.

im using manjaro on my PS4 and its an amazing distro
13
my arch os broke today and couldnt figure out how to fix it. i was going to just reinstall it but then i saw this video and nixos looks like exactly how i like so i think ill go with that instead
13
idk why I giggled at thought of backing up the "trash" folder

"You could still run programs, games, and Word Perfect" ROFL

"It may look like a mess but it is actually a more efficient way". I always thought only having to look in one location for storage devices regardless of type or not having to search 16 locations for application configs was inefficient in Windows.... When i put on my admin or dev hat this layout makes sense, when wearing my user or user support hats it is a frustrating mess.
13
For me open source is better because W10 broke on me last year and I had to install Peppermint. Second best thing I did in my life after quiting smoking 14 years ago. Have a great weekend Dorian;)
13
This is a video all Linux newbies should watch before they install their first Linux app.
13
Arch for the win.
13
I love linux filesystems just because of them using / instead of \ because there is no easy way for me to type that on my keyboard
13
The installer??? With Debian you see this once in your lifetime. Donβt bother πππ btw I use and love Debian too.
13
I have not came across a better explanation of Linux than what you have put on your channel. Thank you for explaining this in a way that even a beginner like myself can learn. Some videos Iβve seen just jump into the terminal and youβre left bewildered, trying to understand another language at times. I hope you come out with more content because you are definitely doing the world some good.
12
Your Cinnamon distro looks alot like KDE, what happened. Did I miss something.
12
This is mind blowing
12
For me, the biggest problem of snap programs is the size, since all of them contain all the dependencies.

$ date -d @0 Wed 31 Dec 1969 04:00:00 PM PST Everything in the nix store has a timestamp of 0 for reproducibility.

I've been using (and in many cases) perplexed by the file system in multiple flavors of Linux over the years (honestly, I don't know what every single file/folder in Windows does either), but this short video increased my comfort level greatly. Thanks for putting it up!
12
Very good explanation. Thanks a lot.

It's like vegans, they sometimes talk to non-vegan people like they are a better person because they are vegan. Great, that's your choice, just don't talk down to others. Thank you for the video.
12
Your videos are a gold mine for every new linux users
12
Awesome channel, and great covers of Gentoo! Really helpful videos! Maybe the series could include something about app-portage/layman and i think then it could be a full series for gentoo beginners.
12
Much better path than Ubuntu and snaps
12
This is the best channel for learning Linux. Great graphics and screen shots, practical, he doesn't talk too fast, explains everything clearly. Excellent communication skills and a great voice. This is my Go To channel for Linux. π
11
Wow! Thank you for the shout out! Very kind of you! I am glad that Krita is working out for you, the program has come a long way and is definitely going to keep getting better. I am sorry that KDE didn't quite work out for you. Gnome is a solid DE and if it does the job for you then that is awesome.

Just the thing I am looking for. It would be really great if you make a video about complete windows to Linux migration. Many people start with Linux and switch back to windows just because of the familiar applications. if you make a video about the Linux applications similar to windows version apps( similar functionality ) and their installation basic usage Like: Coding environment setup ( C CPP python ) One note, Excel word alternatives. Photoediting video editing sound editing Finance application-- money manager accounts manager Project management tools (2 apps) Download managers Games( 2,3d, ) don't know if VR is possible Many would love to see this in one vid or a series playlist. Since many Linux tutorials think they are making any sense but they are really not. because they think the users are already Linux experts I took me over a year to do this complete migration myself. So there many who would love to see this type of content This is my opinion / request

It is probably more simple and the Macs are innocent. I use the Zeta File System (ZFS) and I allow upto 3GB of memory cache for ZFS, so after a while the Vbox Guest OS runs completely from memory. Especially the VMs of the smaller Linux OSes and its running Application(s) fit completely in memory. But also when running e.g. Crystal Disk in a Windows 7 VM, I measure an average throughput of close to 1000 MB/s, while my PC only has 3 old HDDs and SATA-2 with a max of 300 MB/s. It is the magic of large, good working memory caches. It is why I can reboot a VM with eg Xubuntu 18.04 in 7 seconds on my 2008 Desktop. I think something comparable happens in Mac OS, your VM runs largely from OS-X cache memory and if you return to the Host, the cache is in use by the VM and the Host has to read from disk again and reconquer cache space. Be happy with your fast VM and Mac OS caching :) I'm not a Mac fanboy and I will never use Mac, they are simply too expensive.

Thank you so much for your help.

You need to install the widevine DRM for ARM in order to make Netflix and others work. Manjaro could have a aur package for that, or look into some raspberry pi forums for installation guides.

Got interested in Linux recently (after using a live CD to do some recovering on a windows PC). Watching this I can understand now why programmers often use it. Everything is much more accessible on a level that would require specific tools on Windows. However, this also explains why Linux can't get a break on normal desktop user market. Windows is just a lot simpler and does everything for you and you forget it exists. As an OS should do with an end user that just wants to use their computer without having to actually learn things above a certain level!

This is exactly what I've been looking for for the past few days
