Expecting a presiden to go to the front lines or to walk around carelessly in this era of satellite intel and suicide drones is not too bright a proposition. But if you want to look for real cowards the most recent one I can think of is Churchill who would squirrel away in his limo out the back door to his summer house everytime he had advance notice that a German raid was coming over London, then he would materialize in the rubble as if he never left, to encourage Londoners.
