  2. The balance shifting also works on the strategic/ operational level as well. You can see Russians shifting pressure from Chasiv Yar to New York/ Toretsk, to Pokrovsk to Selidove to Kurakhove to Vuhlerar sector. When encountering too much resistance in one place they shift resources somewhere else. In fact the current offensive from Hyrnik Kurakhove sector to Bogoyavlenka shows a high level coordination. I’d be interested to see the analysis of that once that operation matures.

Back when the 2022 war started I assumed the russians would be working on their "deep battle" georgii isserson model, but they proved to have insufficient coordination above the battalion level to attempt such a thing. I am still wondering if thier use of battalion tactical groups, what with div and brig level assets pushed down to battalions, is a result or cause of their chronic leadership dysfunction and atrophy. In any case, as the war dragged on and ISR via drones and other things became ubiquitous, and better integrated with artillery and other support, even accumulating a company to stage an attack became extraordinarily risky, forcing attacks to be meat-wave trickles. The trend of large attacks this past year I believe was partly a result of Ukrainian artillery and ISR starvation, and increasing pressure for the russians to be in as best a position as possible before the US election and other potential countdowns. One practice they have retained at an operational level as you point out here, is the use rolling successive concentrated attacks across different points of the front, instead of such simultaneously. This is a core aspect of isserson's deep battle and was common practice during wwii even when the soviets were not yet capable of exploiting their successes.   12. Fun fact: The Transcarpathian 128th brigade of UAF is also the oldest ground unit of the armed forces. It was originally formed to fight Turkmen rebels during the aftermath of the Russian revolution in the 1920s. It was highly decorated during WW2 (honours removed by independent Ukraine during as part of de-sovietization)

  14. The initial success of the Ukrainians was to be expected, given their opposition. As was their eventual destruction by an ever increasing Russian reaction.   17. Nice work. A small point, in English speaking militaries at least Center of Gravity has a different meaning to the one you are using. You appear to be calling the Russian “Main Effort” the CoG. The Main Effort is the action going on at that moment most critical to success and that has priority for support. The CoG in simple terms is the capability or characteristic that makes the force effective. I haven’t seen a CoG analysis for the Russians, but it could be for example, their divisional artillery.

  26. I don’t think there has been a successful pursuit in the entire war (with a possible exception of the early days of the invasion). I am also not sure it’s been seriously attempted. Perhaps it’s simply too risky to possibly outrun your cover and get caught in the open.

  32. "The leaked Russian map" at 3:30 is a fake. If you look at the town of Sverdlikovo (west of the map north of the border), its name is written in Ukrainian with the Latin letter i. If in Russia even the names of Ukrainian cities are written in Russian, then why should they write the names of their cities in Ukrainian?

  35. I disagree,especially the last part.The recon by force at Ulkakly,actually met with the strike drone company of 36th moto(Balkay). Up to 50 guys got OFSPd and vogged,and night FPVd.And the ukraianians did send a lot of reinforcments at Dachne,its just that harassment fire from both optifibre and regular FPVs were so effective,made it so that lot of ukrainans never reached their positions.At Dachne pocket ,the russians also actively used remote minning by drones en masse for the first time actually. Overall ukrainians lost roughly a 100-120 vehicles between Konstantinopol and Dachne ,starting from early january(Including 2 companies of tanks). They play the same book at Boryspirol,where logistics are hardpressed. Ukrainians counter this by using MRAPs/IMVs as last mile logistics,which leds further exhaustion of protected mobility.Sidenote:The russian strikedrone companies are no slouches either both 36th ,114th,242nd have excellent drone units supplemented by a detachment of russian SSO(Rubikon center).Ukrainan artillery often completely/partially supressed by optifibres.

  36. 47th mechanised brigade already is too large organisation wise to be still called brigade anyway, so they could have already created 1st mechanised division out of it, and quickly created corps sized force out of it and couple of other motorised brigades. But like someone said, they probably lack officers needed to command such a large formations.

  37. The change to a Corps-based army structure that Syrsky announced this past month, should have been done two years ago. That's one of those problems that no amount of Western aid can fix, and is one of the many Ukrainian issues that are costing them the war. Which is something a lot of people forget, that Ukraine is losing this war because of her own missteps. This video just shows one of the more recent results of longer term trends that have been visible throughout the war. Ukrainian Political leaders and wider society delayed the question of additional mobilization for months as they debated over who would be mobilized, and if there would be a mechanism for soldiers fighting since the start of the war to be mustered out. The ultimate lack of agreement a demobilization scheme is part of why the AFU has such a bad AWOL problem that they de-criminalized a soldier's first desertion to get them to come back. Ukrainian High Command prioritized the creation and manning of new brigades over reinforcing existing formations, leading to unit exhaustion and a breakdown of cohesion both between units and within them. Not to mention a continuous loss of territory due to undermanned defenses. Ukrainian Commanders have had real difficulty in coordinating defensive or offensive efforts between brigades where a personal relationship and trust between commanders is lacking, hence the need for a corps system that never got implemented until recently as brigade commanders feared restrictions to their autonomy.
