  20. This doesn't surprise me too much. I remember 10-15 years ago people were using video game character soundboards to prank call people and getting lots of views on YouTube. It was kind of funny when they had Cicero from Skyrim talking nonsense to sex hotlines until they realised it wasn't a real person. Less so when they were wasting the time and resources of the emergency services. As for the legal implications, as someone who wrote his master's thesis on personality rights vis-à-vis Ai voice clones, it's complicated. Unlike other copyright-adjacent rights, personality rights aren't harmonised within the US, or within the EU, so there's a mess of different systems offering different levels of protection across states and countries, and very little case law regarding voice rights in particular. And the case law there is tends to be about the use of voice impersonators in adverts, which doesn't necessarily apply to this sort of thing, because there's a legal distinction between doing something for the purposes of a commercial and doing something for commercial purposes. Basically, if you're using an Ai voice clone of Betty White to sell something, you're probably in trouble, but if you're using her voice to read a story you wrote on YouTube, it might be protected speech in one or other category. And having an Ai give responses of its own in someone else's voice opens another whole can of worms regarding who's responsible, the person doing the prank or the company that put the voice clone chatbot in their hands. Tl:Dr it's complicated, and we won't know until someone either has a big ol' lawsuit about it or legislators get off their arses and hamonise the rules.
