  1. I just can't wrap my head around people who move to foreign countries for work/study for longer periods of time, without remotely being able to speak, or even unwilling to learn the local language. I'd feel absolutely lost, especially on my own.

  2. While I am concerned about working in Japan ultimately it's about finding something that will not overwork me. I think foreigners get more of a pass because we will never be considered Japanese no matter what. I am sad that many Japanese are stressed out so bad. I hope that future generations are more forgiving with themselves. I admire the work ethic but a balance might be more of a healthy pov. I like the different viewpoints. Would you consider doing a video about what it is like for foreigners to successfully becoming a permanent resident? The experience, positive/negative aspects about the process?

  3. Long-term foreign resident in rural Japan here. I was interested to watch this video to see how prices in Tokyo compare with where I live in Mie prefecture. Interestingly, restaurant prices don’t sound much different than where I live. Rent is a little cheaper here…but not by much, at least if you live in an apartment. On the other hand, you don’t mind living in an old house that’s far away from a train station, you can get a decent sized place for 200$ (US) or less per month. As for locally grown vegetables or (sometimes) fruit, it’s super cheap here. The last point is about clothes. One interviewee mentioned a lack of ‘fast fashion’ here…which is funny to me because everyone I know here buys most of their clothes at Uniqlo and GU (cheap and cheaper)… department stores aren’t really a thing anymore! Maybe Mie people are just cheap..? 😆

  7. Honestly, when I was in Japan, I felt like I blended in. I really never caught anyone staring at me or making me feel like a foreigner. Everyone treated me with respect and was so nice. I was also super respectful in return, as that is just simple politeness. It was an amazing experience and I made a ton of friends all over Japan. I will for sure be coming back!

  8. It’s really nice knowing that Raimu is trying to get in touch with her Nigerian roots! I’m Nigerian and my uncle married a Japanese woman that he met in Korea. They even named their first daughter Kurea lol. They divorced because his wife didn’t want their two children to go to Nigeria😞 My uncle said that when Kurea graduates from university, she wants to come and visit Nigeria for the first time! I can’t wait to meet her!

I have to say it’s interesting that I know a few Brazilians (myself included) that are studying Japanese. The relationship between our two countries is an interesting one.   10. Takahashi, notice you tend to interview very young people who are in or just passing from high school. If you interview slightly older people (in their mid to late twenties) who have had more life experience, you may find different and more nuanced responses. Don't stick to one age group.

  12. The english speaking part is so true. Foreigners take it personally when Japanese answer in english but from all the talking with my Japanese friends, even random Japanese people I meet I realized that some Japanese really just want to communicate in english which personally to me is comforting because my japanese isn't good and I need a lot of courage to speak japanese so when my friends only speak japanese with me when I want to really takes off the burden and I feel comfortable with them. I understand that it's annoying for some but for me as a foreigner that wants to talk with Japanese, it's personally comforting.

  15. I got into Anime in 1969 when stationed in Korea while in the army. It started with Manga - Manga books, on cheap paper, were used in the outdoor toilets of the villages. People would read them there while 'busy' and then 'use' the pages (always from the [Western] Back of the book first 😎)

  17. I feel the first couple so much, it's heartwarming to see they're together now as I have a similar story. Met my bf in summer 2019 in Japan, he came to my country a month later and was supposed to come back in spring 2020 to meet my family etc but corona turned things into an almost three years wait until we could see each other again. But we are finally being able to meet again in august and spend our 3rd anniversary together in person and not on facetime. The pandemic really made things frustrating but we kept calm and waited. Much love to all the LDR people out there!

I'll never forget when I was in Kyoto with my Mum, we were wandering round a shopping mall and I remember we stopped at a pet shop to look at the puppies in the window, and I remember an elderly Japanese lady came over to us and started a friendly conversation asking if we lived here and planned to adopt a puppy. We were just visiting, but I'll always remember how kind and friendly she was. It can be intimidating being in a foreign country, so little moments like that make you feel a lot more comfortable.

In countries like South Africa and India, people speak so many languages. They might not be able to speak a language professionally, but they can speak it conversationally, and that's enough.

  23. I worked 6 days per week for 12 hours a day over the course of 4 months. It didn't really feel like it, because the work itself made time appear to fly. However, you do notice how much you've worked, as soon as you're on your spare time, and realize you only have a couple hours to pursue your hobbies and socialize with friends...

  25. This is super interesting, because I do think black/Japanese culture is one of the more interesting crossovers on the planet. In my experience as an American the African American fandom in anime is extremely passionate and Japans love for hip hop and other aspects of black culture has been expressed in many characters in their media I.E Killer Bee. So it’s strange that there is still a soft prejudice in the country, but then again they are pretty xenophobic in general.

  28. As a Chicano, I promise you that we love the representation and appreciation the Japanese have for Chicano culture. Seeing them in the same outfits with the same type of low riders brings some warmth to my heart if I’m being honest. Especially because a lot of them copy our style so well that it can be hard to tell the difference when looking at a true Chicano or a Japanese person who embraces the culture. It’s not cultural appropriation because they show a clear respect for Chicano culture and it’s thanks to our mutual love for low riding classic cars.

  30. Many preconceived notions, but that's a human trait, isn't it? I believe most Westerners are interested and respectful of other cultures and want to learn about them. All the men you interviewed are interesting, honest, and good looking. I'd be honored if any one of them wanted to get to know me better. I'd like to hear from older men (40+) if they would be interested in dating a Western woman.

  31. My father was in the military and we were able to be stationed in Okinawa from 1999-2002. Living there as a teenager was such a surreal experience from the food, the culture and all the people there that were so kind. I still remember vividly when the Okinawan teens would come and visit our high school on base. We would share different interests like anime, music, skateboarding and whatever else. It was so much fun and I still miss Okinawa to this day. I hope to return there one day.

  38. I wouldn't say Americans are lazy. Americans rank 10th among hardest working countries. Japan 21st. I've worked in Japan for 25 years. I've seen business people who are made to stay in the office 10 or 12 hours actually work about 6 hours. It's all about perception not reality.

Egypt and Morocco are popular tourist destinations, that’s why. I would say there are small Arab communities and the number is growing rapidly compared to 15 years ago when I first came to Japan.

  40. I was actually shocked by the wages that people say they live on monthly, and are comfortable. Especially living in Tokyo. I always thought of Japan as a very rich country, even when I would go there for work. Living in California it seems our wages are much higher. Unfortunately it's also more expensive but I thought it would've been on par with Tokyo. Living on Japanese wages in the Bay Area would be impossible. Really interesting video.

  41. I'm from the Netherlands and things are pretty strict here too. Like appointments with who or whatever, be there at least 10-15 minutes earlier. Always the pressure to perform and do better. And there are rules for literally everything, and everything has a structure somehow. When I'm in a relaxed country like e.g. Thailand, I also feel the stress just vanishing. The moment I'm back home it instantly returns. These high-pressure societies can't be good for our health to be honest.

As a Singaporean, I do agree to some of the ladies who prefer to date a guy who is the same race as them just like in my own country, people prefers to date someone from their country of origin. However, more and more Singaporeans are marrying foreigners including myself. My spouse is Indonesian. Intercultural marriage is a norm. For my own experience, dating an Indonesian is that we speak English to each other. I've been married for 14 years yet I can't speak Bahasa Indonesia. I do understand a bit of Malay Language though. However not being able to speak his Mother tongue does not bother him as he always wanted to live in Singapore. As a couple, we shares the same hobbies and interests. We often talk about Classical music and learn Japanese Language together.

  44. 3 months ago I moved to a rural part of Yamaguchi prefecture. Prior to that I was living in a medium-sized city in England and had also spent a year studying in Tokyo in 2018-2019. I find it great living here as people have been so welcoming and friendly. The nature is spectacular. Plus, living rurally definitely forces you to speak Japanese a bit more. I would say the main downside here is feeling isolated or bored but having a car makes it very liveable.
