  8. The best part of the Victorian era clothing is that almost anyone could have the perfect body type. It was a shape not a size and you had many options to achieve that shape. Now it is a size and if your gene pool is not the best you are just stuck!

Something like this debate was actually happening during the 18th century, Where there was this discourse between whether a portrait should aim to re-create reality as the painter saw it or if the painting was more about preserving the character of the person for future generations. You see this play out between a lot of Madame de Pompadour‘s portraits where she was painted looking very much not like what she actually looks like in a number of Boucher paintings and then if you compare those two paintings that were made just in a year or two afterwards by other artists where she looks significantly more aged and is also a lot heavier looking. So, at the very least, this sort of issue over truth versus idealism has been going on for a very long time

  19. on impulse buying: I have a 3 pass rule. If I go back to an item 3 separate times I am allowed to buy it the third time. It massively cuts down on impulse buying but also means I only buy things I really really *want*. (obviously this rule does not apply to things that are necessary and have therefore made it onto The List)

If it just evokes the generalized feeling of ye olden times thats all good, but there is something damaging about perpetrating these impressions as if they're absolutes into a world that doesn't really check.   25. After seeing your Victorian walking skirt video, I have slowly been adding or increasing the size of pockets to all my garments. I despise handbags because they inevitably become a portal to some dark dimension from which items never return unless you literally upend the thing. I've been able to actually wear clothes I would normally avoid because I've increased the pockets. Thank you for enlightening me to actually sensibly sized pockets!

  35. This is going to be a bit random, but thank you so much for posting these videos! I have to say, honestly, that I was not the least bit interested in getting into sewing before I saw your videos. Watching these made me realize that a lot of the fears and inhibitions I faced when looking at sewing things were all things that could be challenged and faced. Watching you solve problems in your work with a happy sort of patience made me feel a lot better about beginning something that seemed daughtingly difficult. Not owning a working sewing machine had also stopped me from getting into this, before I saw you work on your projects with just a hand sewing needle. It inspired me to really, truly, try my hardest with a couple of projects. Now I teach my own sewing classes at a local fabric store, where I get the chance to inspire other people into tumbling down the rabbit hole of problem solving, creativity, and patient hours of calming work. You deeply inspire me and I wanted to let you know, and to thank you for being so amazing and just having fun with what gives you joy ^.^

It’s so true as you say that the modern mass produced corsets just try to make us all I to a flat kind of tube shape. Us curvy girls definitely struggle with that, and seeing how flat the modern corset was on the table made me realise why I could never get comfortable in them. Time to save up and get the real deal.

  39. I was born and raised on a state park that held the site of an 1870's historically-significant military fort in the US midwest. My first paying job (at 16--50 years ago) was as an historic-site interpreter wearing a full-length dress that, per current research, was surprisingly semi-accurate for the time period. I loved doing the job and wearing that dress. Now, after all this time, i can get back to this core passion of living history and making/wearing historical fashion! Thanks to all of you who share your extensive knowledge and passion which helps me expand my own.

Getting a thrill from finding second-hand/antique items that belong to us is so much better than the thrill of buying new stuff - while the latter is just empty, sort of weightless potential, the Old Things have roots and an actual history (even if it’s unknown to us most of the time), which is like a kind of magic. I also have a strange feeling with very old things, like they take some kind of weight off my shoulders, because they were here before me and might just as well be here after me, so they are making space for me in their lives, it’s not I who is doing that. Please excuse the philosophic rant, I feel very strong feelings about this.

  41. I think the confusion about whether or not the coat should have sleeves or not is whether you were using an Inverness or Ulster pattern. My understanding is that the Ulster coat has sleeves, whereas the Inverness cape does not. It is the Inverness that Sherlock Holmes is commonly depicted as wearing, yet I beleive in the novels Sir Arthur Conan Doyle puts him in an Ulster. As in the novels Holmes is a man who appreciates fashion and dressing appropriately for the situation, a dark coloured Ulster over his morning coat would be more appropriate than the Inverness he was depicted in, which was fundamentally a countryside garment.

  50. Treading for bobbin winding, you’re wrapping the tread around the “top post” which is actually a pressure adjuster for the presser foot. You can screw this mechanism clockwise to increase pressure on the presser foot or anti-clockwise to release pressure on the presser foot. The thread should go through the thread guide on the face plate just as it does for normal machine operation. There’s actually a helpful illustration of this process in the singer 128k manual (available via ISMACS as linked in your description). Same again with threading the machine for normal use, you shouldn’t be using the pressure bar thumb screw threads, instead wrap it around the small eyelet with slit in the face plate and then continue as you had been treading. Also I think you’re missing the thread take up spring from the tension regulator (this is often damaged or missing from older machines) but is available as a spare part. If you want to replace it and you’re unable to find it yourself let me know.
