  4. I had never heard of this culture until you made mention of it, and I'm a bit ashamed of myself for that (just as how I hadn't heard of Cucuteni-Trypillia). It's a travesty these amazing ancient cultures are not more well-known, and while maybe not that Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indus Valley Civilization get the lion's share of the attention, that Europe is virtually never included in these discussions. With these Varna artifacts, it's the first time I've truly marveled at European grave goods. Stupendous. With regard to their ethnolinguistic affiliation, I know Suvorovo is associated specifically with Anatolian or Pre-Anatolian Indo-European speakers by some scholars. Anatolia has become famous for its dearth of Steppe ancestry in skeletons from times when Anatolian languages were spoken; do you put any stock in the notion that it was amongst Pre-Anatolian Indo-Europeans that the model of "elite dominance" had its strongest showing? Perhaps this persisted into Anatolia itself and resolves the issue of why there's so little Steppe admixture there? Could the Varna chiefs represent the vanguard of a possible "Anatolian-style elite dominance model" for Indo-European language spread in the region?

  5. Cucuteni-trypillia towns didn't have a central building. Instead they had a central plaza (maidan in modern language). Maidan in Ukrainian history (including contemporary one) is a heart of democracy, a place, where all news are spread and all political or economical decisions are made. So, maidan instead of central authorities building.

  8. Your mention of the hero twins in Indo-European mythology and the association of them with travelling and journeys/quests is interesting. The Navaho of the American South-West have a similar myth of twin heroes who journey to the place of the Sun (who was their father) and from him they receive knowledge and weapons to defeat monsters who are terrifying the lands in which the Twins live.

I hate it when people berate the English by saying he was not English and using it for their political agenda, they really do miss the point. Saint George is now part of our heritage, and has been for the last 700-800 years.

  10. I'm surprised you don't mention the 'cults' of 'St Nicholas', still celebrated today in the Netherlands, Belgium and parts of Germany. Sinterklaas being an obvious christianisation of Wodan (beard ,staff and strange hat). He has his entry parade, riding a horse that can fly, accompanied by young black painted people that do cartweels and stuff. Brandishing their bundles of rods with which to punish those that have been bad.

  11. I have heard of Gilles de Rais, but only in accordance with Jeanne d'Arc . I knew he was quite the war hero but I did NOT know this messed up life beyond the sieges and battlefields. Thanks for this very entertaining but most importantly informative and disturbing retelling of his life.

I keep getting recommended history videos with AI voices these days, and whether the information is good or not, I'm always so put off that I don't bother watching them.   13. Wow. Every time I start thinking I have a half-decent grasp of what was going on in the ancient world, I get a nice surprise like this. I'd love to see more like this, only about other somewhat isolated places. It's fascinating, how long-lasting cultures change over time, due to changes in environment or contact with outsiders. Cultures that manages to retain their identity, despite outside groups invading, always amaze me. I've paid too much attention to the larger, more powerful civilizations;, and not enough to the ones that didn't go out and conquer all their neighbors. How many other cultures have I ignored? No idea, but I'm getting more interested lately. I can't think of the name of the islands in the Atlantic that I'm thinking of, but I've been seeing videos about them popping up recently. Until those appeared in my feed, I'd barely remembered those islands existed...and no idea that they'd been inhabited for thousands of years. Humans seem to have gotten to just about any inhabitable land you can name, long enough ago that we barely know anything at all about them. I think it would be interesting to do a sort of survey of all these little places, especially the ones that haven't been studied extensively.

Most people are not aware how cold resistant horses actually are: the breed of the turkic yakut/Sakha people in north-east siberia can deal with temperatures of -70°C/-94°F, being outdoors all the year - and winter lasts almost 9 month there. The yakut cattle is extremly resistant too - although it is less resilient than the horses and is usually brought to stables during winter occasionally cattle escapes into the wild and survives to the next spring. I'm extremly fascinated by the yakut/Sakha who fled from the mongols to the north and adapted their typical turkic nomadic lifestyle to one of the harshest environments on earth.

I love reading on Indo-European mythology and gushing over all the similarities knowing full well the people who narrate these stories are related, albeit being thousands of KMs apart. I was reading on Mesopotamian myths and founds stunning similarities between Sumero-Akkadian creation myths and that of the Indo-Europeans, such as the slaying of Ymir and Tiamat, and how Odin and Marduk respectively dismembered the their bodies and created the world from those pieces.

All the little problems I've had really are nothing compared to absolutely amazing lineage and story we are all a part of. People nowadays throw away history like it's a waste of time. But perhaps its the key to some of the problems western society is facing today. Especially lack of purpose in life alot of youths feel today.

  32. The Yamnaya were smaller than some of their immediate forebears, like the Dnieper-Donets people. Their large size was probably mostly genetic, from the EHG Dnieper-Donets ancestors moreso than anything else.

  35. I have always seen the Sumerian army depicted in stele described as a phalanx or less often as a shieldwall so it's interesting to see that such descriptions are open to interpretation. I wonder how well trained a Sumerian force would've been in combat. Considering the numerous accounts of their defeats by mountain tribes it would seem that perhaps it wasn't as well trained or motivated as a name like 'phalanx' (which tends to conjure up images of Alexander's army) would have people believe. On another note, I was lucky enough to see the Standard of Ur and the golden helmet in the British museum a few years back. Amazing artefacts. I also wonder, despite being the earliest civilization, why Sumer hasn't really penetrated the public consciousness much. I can't think of any representation of Sumer in pop culture - not in novels, comics, films, TV, or games, unless it's a passing mention - they never take centre stage. Another excellent and informative video too.

Fun facts about Cyprus from German documentary "Das Bronzekartell": - One mine in Cyprus ist active for about 7000 years until today - It's estimated that Cyprus produced about 200.000 tons of copper within the last 7000 years - mostly without any machinery - The cooper of the Uluburu shipwreck has been matched to a cypriotic cooper mine via radioisotopes (see Das Bronzekartell) - My fav one: Cyprus mines melted the cooper directly on the Cyprus, burning EVERY available tree on the island - at least 13!!! times

  48. I find the meeting point between farmers and hunter gatherers a fascinating topic. I've often wondered how long hunter gatherers survived in Britain and whether, in fact, there may have been pockets of people living in that manner in wilder areas until relatively recently alongside the established history of settled peoples abiding by the dominating cultures we visualise. I wonder too about diplomacy and trading between these groups. The offering of milk to maintain relations with folkloric entities (such as hobs, an illusive tutelary spirit seen to act as guardians of localities in the North of England with counterparts right across Europe) is a recurring theme and I wonder whether these beliefs may have been derived from the means by which settled pastoralists kept surrounding hunter gatherers on good terms, and perhaps persuaded them not to hunt their livestock [since milk is one thing a hunter gatherer cannot find by other means]. Thanks for the insights you share here, I very much appreciate your middle-road approach, well researched yet sharing your own thoughts too.

  50. I've seen a LOT of videos on Otzi but none have tied it together as coherently and imaginatively. I hope 🤞🤞🤞🤞to teach an Anthropology course next year and this would be an excellent way to discuss the Neolithic/ Bronze Age transition as well as the breadth of information we can now access through the archaeological sciences.
