  4. Spanish Inquisition punishments please. When I was growing up, this was always used in skits or jokes. In reality, I think the Spanish Inquisitions brought some crazy new definitions to pain and suffering.

  33. Is everything Nigeria to this person, first the Akans are an ethnic group in modern Ghana and part of the Ivory Coast, at the time, they had conquered parts of Togo as well. Even in the map shown the Dahomey clearly lied in modern day Benin, not in Nigeria. That's all I caught, but I liked the short documentary anyways.

  34. I believe House of the dead ( which is an outstanding book ) was written by Dostoevsky back in the 1800's, decades before the Soviet Union was even formed. Dostoevsky was given a last minute reprieve by the CZAR and rather than being executed was sentenced to some time in a Czarist penal colony. The book is a semi autobiographical story about his experience there. An outstanding read. The Great Terror by Robert Conguest is a a good place to start to get a basic feel for what life was like during you might say high Stalinism and there is an excellent chapter in the book about what life was like in the Gulag under Stalin during the purges. A day in the life of Ivan Denosovich and the Gulag Archipelago are must reads if one is truly interested in this topic. Hope this helps.

They were underfed, misclothed, deprived of sleep and anything comfortable and under constant stress! They were glad if they had 2 minutes of peace and calm for breathing. Sandpit hero!
