I saw the heroism of Ukranian, Russian and Soviet men and women who risked their health and lives to stop a major disaster that would have poisoned not just the USSR, but also much of Northern Europe. Many of those people deserve not only to be named Heroes of the Soviet Union, but Heroes of the World. The UN should recognize them. I salute them.

My friend, you have just given the viewers a living example of a "nagruska." 😂 I absolutely love your videos. It is great to document all of this information before it disappears from living memory. If you want to do videos on Soviet terminology, maybe you can make one on "silka." (This suggestion is coming from a person who used to live in Yuzhno-sakhalinsk). 😆

  17. Here in Czechia we loved soviet cartoon show "Nu Pogodi" . You know, the one where the wolf is chasing the rabbit. The 'bad guy' Wolf became kind of cult figure here, and he smoked those cigarettes with long empty "filter" -Such type of cigs were not typically sold in Czechoslovakia. When they (rarely) imported batch of these from the SU, people here called these russian cigarettes "Vlkovky" literally "Wolf's cigarettes", and the batch was sold very quickly as everybody wanted to show his friends how he is smoking cig "like a wolf from Nu Pogodi":)

  23. I was 12 years old and lived in Leningrad at the time of Chernobyl accident. My mom went to May 1st parade and got as we found out later a mild radioactive iodine poisoning. At the time it felt like a sore throat. Sergei, the missing things you mentioned are true but to put them into the movie and give them justice would have made it significantly longer and possibly compromised the focus of the movie. --Герман Штром

  24. The best explanation you gave was that the HBO series destroyed their efforts to rebuild the image of USSR.The older generation was reminded how things really looked in USSR. The new generation learned some things they can find only in the books if they look for them. Putinist media is saturating the public airwaves with propaganda using natural human instincts to remember only the good and forget about the bad. But the majority of Russians still have deep memories how things really were. HBO took these memories out and even pushed this in horror direction. This created interesting discussions between the old and the new generation, where the new generation was astonished about the Soviet reality they have never seen and the old generation confirmed that many of the things shown by HBO were real. And this is very important - almost everybody in Russia suffered one way or another because of Chernobil - it is universal topic. It is also a joint experience between Ukraine and Russia and large part of Putinist efforts were to isolate Western ideas from Ukraine influencing Russians.This topic however can not be separated. Moreover - this was a shared experience also with Eastern and Western Europe.

  25. My mother in law from Moscow USSR almost got a heart attack when in 1989 she first time saw the Hypermart in Garland TX during her first visit in US! Her first words were: "Oh, God! What a shit we live in back there!" She NEVER used such a language before in her life!!!

  26. Thank your lucky stars you never smoked. I did from when I was about 16. I'm now 73 and quit five years ago, but it wasn't soon enough, so I'm now suffering from COPD. I first visited Russia in 1992, right after the collapse of the USSR. I brought in five cartons of Marlboros, the maximum allowed at the time. I didn't sell them. I gave them to friends I met and used them for tips to taxi drivers and tour guides. It was nearly impossible to get real US made Marlboros, and a pack of 20 was appreciated even more than getting dollars as a tip. Almost everyone smoked, and people smoked almost everywhere. We went to the Moscow Circus, and every seat had an ashtray in the arm rest, and almost everyone was smoking. Now that I think about it, the only places I didn't see people smoking was in museums and churches. I tried some Russian smokes, including Apollo, Kosmos, Diplomat, Crest, TU-144, and Belomorkanal. The last were the weirdest I've ever smoked. They were in a cardboard tube and burned in an uneven way and produced an acrid smoke from the cardboard. They had the strongest tobacco I've ever smoked. I was so dizzy from one drag I had to sit down for a few minutes. The Kosmos and TU-144 were about the closest to a US smoke, but even they were a lot stronger than a Marlboro. I liked the TU-144's because I was a private pilot, and it's the only cigarette brand I've seen named after a plane. The pack was beautifully printed with the gold panel and color picture of the aircraft on the front. I still have an unopened pack as a souvenir of that trip. I never saw the TU-134 brand or I would've gotten one of those too. The Moldovan made Marlboros were pretty good, but still didn't taste like a US made Marlboro.

  30. The whole thread of this series was how obscene the secrecy of the old USSR was, and how that led to this disaster, and made the after effects much worse for so many. Gorbachev's words "Our strength is from the perception of our strength" sums it up perfectly. I'd like to think we have had our eyes opened to the bravery shown by so many. The world would be a far better place without the elites and their power over the media!! It's the same in the west, not just Russia.....

August 1991 heard about coup d'état attempt in Moscow, switched on CNN and saw Yeltsin climbing the tank to give a talk. Unfortunately there was a commercial break and I never heard what he had to say, as it was live from Moscow :-)

  33. My best friend in college had defected from Soviet Union. After the collapse, her mother came to the US for about 6 months. It was a very novel thing for her to ride in a car and she thought my 4x4 truck was amazing. She was a military engineer in the USSR and in her mind 4x4 = military vehicle. Anyways, she loved riding in my truck so one day I took her out to the desert and with her broken English and my extremely limited, broken Russian, I gave her a driving lesson. That lesson consisted of look at my feet, right pedal makes you go, left pedal makes you stop. lol I found a big clear spot with no big rocks near, stopped and let her drive. She was thrilled and we ended up driving around for a few hours. She was in her mid 60's and it was the first time she had ever driven a car. She had lots of fun and I was glad I could do that for her. We made that a regular thing during her visit and she must have gotten 50 photos of her learning to drive.

These series fantastically depict Soviet reality down to detail, accents don't matter - I listen to English speech, but hear Russian. I found out about the disaster from Voice of America we caught that night on a portable radio
