I never remember her wearing a watch. She managed everything by hand. I'm sure she was just one of millions of woman of the time... I lived with her in my formative years, and couldn't imagine life without her. She was the kindest most loving woman imaginable. She'd give me her last sixpence. I was born on her own feather bed in 1947....

  6. I was homeless for the past 3 years. Finallu got off the street 5 months ago. It's terrible. I had to pretend I had a drinking problem so I could get into a rehab to get off the street and then a sober living home til I could save for an apartment. There was no resources unless you were a addicted. Which I guess is good but most of them don't want to use the opportunities that are out there.

I was homeless for most of 8 year's, this story reminds me of what I saw and heard as a homeless person, except the illness and the children, how the discription was made of how the nurse dressed the little dead girl broke my heart. What bothers me mostly this type of poverty and sickness still goes on all over the world, in slums and war torn areas of the world. Let's do what we can to make the world a better place.

  9. Doing my family history, Iā€™ve recently found that some of my predecessors lived in this street in Victorian times. My relatives appear to have lived in the poorest parts of East London, and just about anywhere else that Iā€™ve found them. What a struggle it must have been.

  10. I lived in the slums of Dallas. I remember my mama used to scrub the bathtub before we took our baths. There were 4 families Sharing one tub. I remember having a toilet in our apartment. My parents worked very hard and we moved into a real house in the suburbs Of Dallas that we owned. All my life I remembered I was always clean, always had good shoes and clothes. Mama and Daddy always gave us Christmas presents and birthdays too. As the years went by, I got braces on my teeth! They sent my brother to college and me as well. They would work 2 jobs sometimes. Sadly my Mama died at 58 and Daddy at 67. I wish I would have told them how I appreciated what they did for us. šŸ˜¢ ā¤

  11. I grew up in a slum in London, to a single mum. She sent me out with a can to get esso oil for the oil fire, and to the launderette with my sister to wash the bedding. It was in the 60s. I went to hospital every Winter with asthma and bronchitis.In the Spring the housemice ran riot, sometimes over my bed at night. Despite this, I went to University, did Nursing, and trained as an aromatherapist. I raised a son on my own But, my childhood still haunts me, and Ive never had good health.

My paternal great grand parents lived in the East End of London in areas such as Whitechapel, Shadwell, St George in the East, Mile End..They were Dockers, Carters, Stokers, Laundressesā€¦. during this time. Iā€™m very proud that regardless how very poor they were, they fought to survive and better their lives as each generation worked for a better life for their children.

In 2013 I retired from work and planned to travel to Britain and other countries in Europe, but it was meant not to be I have MS and had a major relapse which has put me down since..   22. According to the 1891 census, there was a young servant living in my (very modest) Victorian terraced house. She must have slept in the kitchen. given the size of the family that was living here at the time. She was 14 at the time of the census. I often think about her and the amount of work she had to do. there are 5 fireplaces plus a kitchen range to deal with, for starters. Thank you for this very informative video.

  23. My family came here from Bohemia in 1893. I have their records entering the country. My great great grandpa snuck aboard a ship under his wifeā€™s hoop skirt so they only paid one fare. They left because he kept being conscripted into the army for the never ending wars. They made their way to Kansas and Missouri and became farmers.

London immersed himself into the impoverished east end, known as the Whitechapel district, for a short time. He took nothing with, especially money. He tried to live under the same conditions that was typical of the east end. When his time in the Abyss was over, his view of the human condition was greatly changed.

  27. I can remember 6-7 year old children, bared legged without shoes, smoking cigs, playing in Mancunian slum streets in the early 1960's. It was seriously deprived even then. Anyway, Sunday night it a good night. Primary sources of history beautifully presented in this rich narrative style. I wish more people watched and listened to your channel. They'd learn a lot they've never known about social history and bring some inner peace to the world.

I would rather donate money than food because sometimes a needy person won't have all the ingredients or proper utilities to prepare something slightly more complex. As I have mixed feelings about breaking 112yrs of family history in Hoxton by being the last of us about to move out of Hoxton/London, in a way I do count myself blessed to have witnessed , and been part of, so many changes in Hoxton that they would have called you mental if you had predicted them 40-50yrs ago. We ( dad/brothers) had a fruit & veg stall along the market and I eventually opened a butchers shop after being given choice of 5yrs butchers apprenticeship or borstal. I miss the old days with all my heart and the community spirit and unity that could never be replicated again was something that only comes from those who have all suffered together with the echo's German bombs still in many memory's & being piss poor and ignorant living in a craphole council flat. I may miss nostalgia but the modernisation and evolution of a historic poor run down area has seen a standard of living increased for so many undreamed of not that long ago. The pubs closing & changing into flat and the 2nd hand shops now converted to selling hand made beers, nothing stays the same forever. Hoxton still has it's scumbags and faults , but I now see a modern vibrant area and wonder what my old mum & dad would think knowing we were recently listening to classical music coming from Shoreditch Green, that was once just rows of bombed out houses with the streets lined with corrugated Iron fences and a bunch of asbestos panelled pre fab bungalows the council put pensioners in to live, while sitting in the same family garden they once sat in, not worrying about the rat's coming in from the bomb sites.

Whether it's regarding the black plague, or Jack the ripper, or just simply hearing about how the residents lived their lives. They were truly amazing and resilient people, who overcame struggles we could never imagine in our worst nightmares.

  41. This nearly happened to one of my Great Aunts. Thankfully she was stopped from getting on the boat by family members (I canā€™t remember who). I do know she thought she was in love and escaping to South America to be with him. She lived into her 90ā€™s with a couple of her siblings but never married. Iā€™ve seen photos of her in her prime, and she was quite striking. Iā€™m sure she mustā€™ve had many offers.

I have always been interested in social history, my grandmother was born in 1899 and she would tell me stories of her childhood and stories that her grandmother would tell her ,it was a very hard life.   47. Another sense battering historical narrative. You can almost see and smell the squalor, feel the grime. Horrendous. The census of 06-02-1861 records Star Street as consisting of 123 houses and about 1500 people of whom 300 were children and many were barefoot. I recall seeing children in Manchester slums without shoes in the 1960's. Amazing how quickly that cannot even be imagined by most people just 60 years later.
