  3. When I first saw the film Titanic I wanted so much to be like Rose (Kate Winslet). But I eventually can to realize than I AM her. I sit on my fat bottom, in my own house, warm, drinking coffee wearing coloured fabrics and jewellery. A house built on the fields in which I would have worked in back then. Those poor bloody souls!💗 Thank God things have and do continue to change since then!

  5. More people need to watch these videos, social history is so often 'skipped over' in formal education. My own Great Grandmother was the most amazing woman who fought tooth and nail to keep herself and her 7 children out of the workhouse. Her husband had abandoned her. Those children all grew up to be lovely people, despite the hoops and hardships. No privilege of any kind other than having a strong willed mother. Bless them all.

  6. This is how history in school should be taught. Understandable, good for vision learners and it’s not full of ‘filler’ it’s factual and interesting. When I was a kid with undiagnosed ADHD, this , is exactly how I would of loved to have seen these videos . My boys watch these videos after reading Horrible Histories. A "life on the ocean wave, A home on the rolling deep" that transformed desperately neglected urchins and burgeoning criminals into useful (if ultimately expendable) members of Victorian society was considered a very good prospect indeed. As was sung of them, albeit rather tongue in cheek, "A British Tar is a soaring soul, As free as a mountain bird" (HMS Pinafore). At least they were cared for (after a fashion), fed, had a roof over their heads and a value put on their otherwise worthless lives. Small wonder many responded well. It was better by far than a life of grinding poverty and depravity in the stews. Thank you for a fascinating narrative which contrasts remarkably with the usual stories of Victorian tragedy and horror.

  13. Another great Edwardian presentation. I can't imagine living like that ,but it was better than sleeping outside. I think I would drink as well. They still have shelters here in America and I would like to think it was a bit better. I met some women who lived in one and they said stealing was the worst problem. They knew who was doing it. Please with this being holiday time so they are collecting for the homeless please buy soap,shampoo and conditioner as well as food as it makes them feel so much better, thank you. I hope you don't mind me doing this but I just feel it's important.

  14. Being homeless seemed to have been a worse crime than pretty well anything else. Mild punishment against assault of man'spouse still applies today far too often. Jack London pointed out the inequalities of the punishments very well.

  21. Apologizing to be alive : that is exactly what poverty make you feel like all the time.... During my time in london 1994 2007 i often felt the same. The dole sees you don't starve but for a while " sofa surfing" and squatting my only shield against pure homelessness did wear away at my tenuous feeling of being entitled to exist. To live. This is once more a vividly told story, and your voice(s) are so well suited for telling them.... thank you very much for this and all the other videos. If people knew how close to the ledge of the homelessness they live.... Thank you once more!

  22. I belong to The Salvation Army who have been fighting against these housing conditions for 150 years. Goodwill officers worked in the slums, hands on, cleaning the rooms, nursing the sick and laying out the dead. The Founder, William Booth, wrote a book In Darkest England And The Way Out which laid out ways people could be helped out of poverty and his ideas were taken up by the new health service and social services in the 1940's.

  23. Man, it must've been terrifying hearing that buzz sound from the bomb. Just imagine, in the middle of the night, there's just peaceful silence, then you hear a plane flying overhead followed by the reverbating sound of the bomb. You hear it getting closer and you run looking for cover, then the sound just cuts off and the dead silence fills the air a few seconds before the explosion and you're just there with your heart racing in the darkness, hoping that the bomb falls somewhere far from you.

  26. When I was about 9 years old, there was a fancy dress competition in my village, mum made sandwich boards with newspaper clippings stuck to front and back. I had old style clothes on and the sandwich boards for the competition and come away with the winners rosette and a big bar of chocolate. Great memory.

My town, Gosport, knows much of the prison hulks; they used to be moored near here in Portsmouth Harbour, and also in our creeks, and Burrow Island, a small island connected to one of those creeks, is still strewn with the remains of some of those unfortunate souls. On my first visit to the island as a thirteen-year-old in 2008, I found myself trudging over large, grey bones on the shore - 'oh, there must have been animals here', I naively thought.

  31. 1861, my ancestor James Rouse b1818 lived at 34, Lambert Street with his wife b1810 and seventeen others , ie four families at the address. He was working as a street Hawker selling crockery. His wife showing no occupation. Their children had long gone. Things had not improved, other ancestors husband and wife, both b1833 were admitted into the workhouse in 1901.

Being a black woman in America, I couldn't help but keep thinking, well, there actually were worse jobs in the cotton industry on the early 1800s 😏, but that was pretty bad. I'm sure there were some actual slaves in the US that were less miserable than some of these young people being similarly exploited- just without having been officially designated a "slave." Whenever you are deprived of agency over yourself, in someone else's financially interest, it's basically slavery. So sad, at least slavery is recognized here. It seems like no one knows these poor children ever existed. Thank you for keeping the memory of these babies and the sacrifices they were forced to make alive. They existed and they mattered and the least we can do is acknowledge them and condemn those who exploited them.

It is both a funny and also a creepy thing that I am mesmerised by listening to the narration, imagining everything and then thinking, well, I actually sort of lived that way in the 1980s in socialist Eastern Germany… The flat we had was beautiful on the inside but only because my parents were able to make something good out of it. The house was in a desolate state , because it was a so-called “Ausbauwohnung”, you had to do the renovation on your own. Everything around could be right out of this video.

  45. My father, his brother and his parents all sadly got tuberkulose in 1946 here in Denmark 😢 My grandmother died a year later and my grandfather 10 years later. In Esbjerg the doctors had removed 10 of his ribbs over the years in hope of saving him ! I was born 3 month after he passed away in 1957. I would have loved to know my grandparents. They had a farm before the illness. My farher and his brother were bullied in the schol because of tuberkulose ! They were called tuberculosepigs 😢 It realy isn't that long ago.. Sad and disturbend story of to small boys loosing both parents 😢😢

  47. My great-grandmother was born in the slums of Narrow Marsh. She was one of 14 children. Narrow Marsh Nottingham was called one of the worse slumps in Europe. The lace trade had a lot to answer for.

  50. My grandmother was used for child labor. She made very little money. Her spine was scarred from picking up heavy loads. I like the true story on this show with historical pictures.
