One of the things I love about videos like this one is that it forces me to go back and learn more about things I thought I had a better grasp on (Sabbatai Zevi and Lurianic Kabbalah, in this instance). I will say this- what Nathan of Gaza was claiming, as part of his promotion/defense of Zevi, sounds roughly familiar to things I remember learning as a kid in Catholic school: the idea that, following the crucifixion, Jesus went to hell (because He carried the world’s sins), and there in redeemed the souls of the long dead patriarchs and others who, though righteous and followers of G-d, still died in sin. Years later, I would read similar tales, but relating to other ancient religions (the story of Osiris, the Epic of Gilgamesh, and in stories of Mithra. The theme is very much the same, the devil (literally, sometimes) is in the details. As one of my high school history teachers once said- “history doesn’t always repeat itself, but it rhymes a lot”.

When giving out credit to ahistorical alchemical views, I think Terence Mckenna deserves a lot of credit (I love Terence but he was pushing the ahistorical interpretations hard in the 80s and 90s, and was a self-proclaimed student of Eliade and Jung) for his popularity on YouTube and influence on more recent generations.

You have a real way of giving cultural and historical context to these topics and making the past feel much more alive and relatable and much less "wut? why would anyone believe that?" Lately, I've even gotten my best friend into your videos, not because she's interested in the esoteric or occult but because she loves your (usually) low-key snark so much. Plus you always include resources and recommended reading in your descriptions (and in the videos themselves) which I just love, both because I enjoy doing my own research and because so many content creators state things as fact without citing a single source. Of all the gods that humanity has presented, Dhwtj is one of the few that I would absolutely be okay with existing. His whole domain of truth, knowledge, and wisdom is quite admirable for humanity. To me, the dream of the Library of Alexandria is very much alive in torrenting communities, which both make knowledge and culture freely accessible and more pervasive to destruction through their dispersion in a network of enthusiasts. The raid that killed What.cd, in my opinion, is a tragedy comparable to the fires that consumed so many ancient works. Thankfully, nowadays, rebuilding those virtual institutions is much more possible than it was to those ancient scholars.

  32. I'm not an esotericist, I come from an skeptic, secular background, and I come here precisely because when I com here I feel like I'm taking a top level class on these topics. And I like it because the content you make demands from the viewer, you are talking about history, about philosophy, about intelectual history, about anthropology. I love that it demands my full attention and I love that it's hard to grasp, frequently I had to rewind and watch and re watch to get the concepts. This is not easier than a Hegel Lecture and I love the level and the rigour of the research you put on these lectures. Cuz that's what they're to me, I see you as my teacher and these videos are top level lectures to me. You know you are a truly innovator here. I'm from México, here a niche philosophy youtuber professor just announced he's quitting his job cuz academy sucks, it's an old monolith that needs to change and this phenomenon of professors coming from the academy to teach massively online is moving things to uncharted and exciting territory, is a revolution in knowledge in the making, and you are por of it.   43. Interesting. Something struck me when you talked about Yahweh not having much contact with the dead in Sheol (and not, as my autocorrect would have, Seoul). There's a troubling passage in Job where God rewards Job, not by raising his dead children but by giving him new ones - as if children were replaceable and interchangeable. Job is the oldest book in the Old Testament (?). Could it be that this was written before people believed Yahweh could raise the dead?
