  4. In all of the discussion of spiritualism I've seen before now, there has never been a nod to the radical social reform messages that have often come through. In modern spiritualist circles (with which I don't have direct contact; I've only seen documentaries or heard about certain aspects of them, and have met a few spiritualists semi-casually), I haven't heard about much of a carry-over of this aspect of the tradition, either...which is a great pity. Considering where it was happening and when, it shouldn't be a surprise; and yet, in the History textbooks that I've used in the college classes I used to teach, the Second Great Awakening's connection to some of these more radical ideas is not always emphasized, outside of ideas like the Oneida community's free love and so forth...and spiritualism doesn't get much mention at all. :( Also: as ever, your jokes in the captions are always fantastic...that password was brilliant! ;) And I seriously hope folks around our age get the "Yo! Fox Sisters Raps" reference as well...!

I had a professor in college who claimed that the early medieval church (pre-1000 CE) didn't have that much interest in what common people actually believed, so long as they were nominally Christian and didn't adhere to any major hetereodoxy, like Arrianism. It sort of made sense to me given the relatively limited reach of the church in Rome and the population shifts throughout western Europe. I never did see a source on that though, so it could have just been his wild speculation. Thanks so much Dr. Sledge. Your videos and livestreams are the best!

  10. I think that remembering episodes like the ones you documented here is an important exercise for us believers. Sometimes, in our fight against our own bad tendencies and disbelief, we can develop a tendency towards extreme dogmatism; while I don't consider dogmatism and ortodoxy per se as a problem, we have to always pay attention to what it can become if we are not careful.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that you are one of the most learned, most skilled indeed most impressive human beings that I have ever even read about much less had the honour, the exquisite delight of actually achieving a communication with.   17. just dropping in to say, Thank you! for the content itself, and also for sharing your own story. I'm from the Philippines, and I was into punk music in the 80s and a physics major in college. my self-avowed Christian professors accused me of being a Satanist and would read scripture directed at me in class, just because I dressed a certain way and listened to certain music. One of them even insisted I attend born again Christian seminars on weekends! It's a wonder I ever finished college, come to think of it! This video made me realize, maybe it wasn't just my dumb luck this was all happening, that maybe it was this 'Satanic Panic' that had somehow spread all the way to the other side of the world, the Philppines. Anyway, whatever the case, again, thank you for this video!

Bureus is well known for being the first "riksantikvarie", i.e. head of the National Antiquities Office and of course for his impressive documenting of rune stones and other ancient monuments. But I don't think we talk or think much about him as a mystic. I learned a lot from your episode! And I HATE thas his work is being misused by the nazi racist crowd.

  23. Thanks so much for diving into this, especially the first half of the video. The approaches of Eliade & Jung are interesting, but not very historical. You briefly mentioned Lawrence Principe, and I highly recommended his course on the history of science to 1700 and his interview with Earl Fontainelle of the SHWEP. Him & Matteo Martelli are doing some amazing work. Thanks Dr. Sledge! Ill definitely be coming back to this video. Side note: I think I speak for everyone when I say that I'm excited for a potential class on Merkavah/Hekhalot literature!

About the pescetarian thing, if I'm not mistaken, many a species of fish reproduce by external fecundation (that is, formally, a sexuated reproduction but with no intercorse) in a way that there is no body contact or "act". I don't know if they had this scientific knowledge in Antiquity, but it's an interesting fact to know.

  44. I'm actually a Christian but enjoy the videos very much. Your library is better than mine. All I have apart from the Christian books are the Midrash Rabbah, Artscroll Siddur, and English translation of the Shulchan Aruch and a swathe of academic books on the intertestamental period and Jewish and Roman backgrounds to the New Testament. My favourite books are on the Pharisees by Neusner and also by Saldarini.
