  8. One thing I’ve noticed in my study of history, and just through observing others generally, is that there is brilliance in all social castes/classes. It’s a shame technology has only allowed us to read the works of wealthy and powerful people. Technology like the internet is slowly changing that though, since anyone with access to it can publish stuff if they want. That’s still a big barrier for a lot of humanity at the moment, but we’re building the infrastructure necessary for the brilliant minds of the lower castes to recieve the recognition they deserve. Thanks for the work you’re doing. This has quickly become one of my favorite youtube channels.

  14. I lot of people don't understand the depth of the amount of victims of the satanic panic. I was raised in the aftermath in the 90s in a small town where the accusations still got flung around and my mother accusing everything and everyone (which was funny considering my father use to play D&D as a teen and still wanted to but held back because of her) so I never learned of the worst until I was older. Figures, I'd grow to love most things that would have had me attacked. I knew this. But the day I found out the amount of teachers and beloved members of communities having their lives destroyed because of these accusations...how many were queer and especially targeted (and we still see the impact of that to this day from far right conspiracy theorists that gay people are part of satanic cults aiming to sacrifice children)...it was all very devastating. My mother would have put me at the stake. She still would if she discovered a lot of my life now. So many were never freed from prison, so many false confessions because of hours of grilling and harassment from cops, and if they did get out their entire life was uprooted with reputation destroyed. The lack of accountability hurts every time to hear about. I'm sorry you had to deal with that first hand.

  18. Thanks to this video, I found Conway's text and she really, really, really should have taken advanced math and physics training. She's knocking on the door of things like number theory, cosmology, and calculus, in an idea-driven sense. Her definition of time as that which comes to an end when everything stops moving is pretty interesting. Should you do a video on Elisabeth, I would not complain. :-)

  20. As a moderate fan of that “Jungian guru”, I have to say I felt similarly about his interpretation of the bible. How one can interpret something like that without taking into account the esoteric, multicultural, multi-linguistic origins makes no sense to me. This channel has been so incredibly eye-opening for that very reason!

  24.  @TheEsotericaChannel  in these cases, people are always looking for a new antagonist, or just a new source of spiritual power to revere. People who casually "chase" mythologies get burned out and then ultimately disillusioned as they miss out on any meaning or lesson and realize that it's yet another shadow that cannot soothe their existential loneliness. I see the internet getting more and more extreme with their "beliefs" which is why I love your channel so much because you give us meaning with "boring" schools of thought.

  38. The part around 39:00 that brings up the side-notes, marginalia, and contradictory instructions reminds me of something very familiar: modified food recipes! I have all sorts of notes written in cookbooks, often don't bother crossing out steps I already know to skip, and might leave in contradictory advice or failed substitutions for reference later on. Delightful to get the sense that these ritual references may have been modified in similar ways from practitioner to practitioner, or even within the lifetime of a single magic-user.

  39. I found myself trying to figure out Bataille's ideas after reading "Story of the Eye." It was recommended by others, and made for...intriguing reading. I didn't love it or hate it, just found myself wondering what exactly he was driving at. Reading up on some of his other ideas, it made more sense, but Bataille is a tricky one to wrap your head around. He is a bit of a maverick in the philosophical canon. His influence was definitely there in a lot of the post-structuralists, along with Heidegger. A lot of people that have trouble making sense out of Derrida and Foucault would probably benefit from reading some Bataille, Heidegger, etc. Thanks for the video!

  46. I remember you also mentioned in a previous video that the polemic writings of Irenaeus were used to fill in the holes in Gnostic texts discovered in Modern Times. And likewise, the discovery of the Gnostic texts gave us a way to evaluate the historical accuracy of the proto-orthodox polemic writings. History is like a matchmaker with a weird sense of humor.

  50. I think the direct source for the Hermes = Enoch business is possibly from the Book of Six Principles of Things, or the Liber de compositione alchimiae by Morienus, but it's also in Abu Mashar which Agrippa was certainly no stranger to.
