  2. Also from everything I've seen just investing less than $100 in a vacuum sealer can help prevent freezer burn and extend foods freezer life. Between that canning, drying, and fermenting and just buying some already freeze dried stuff you'd maybe want in an emergency seems more realistic. A small solar power system to run a chest freezer probably costs less too and can be sized up to include some other fun things that are useful.

I think the brake light NEEDS to be accelerometer based, (or based on using the speedometer and calculating rate of declaration) because if you used the regen alone, it might turn your brake light on even when going a constant speed (down a hill, for example. you don't want your brake light coming on if you are maintaining the speed limit but still getting significant regen).

  6. That photoelectric alarm that went off every time the dryer was on likely failed due to lint! The microcontroller typically adjusts to the background level of radiant light detected. When dust builds in these detectors, they can sometimes trigger due to the reflectivity of the dust on the far side of the chamber bouncing light around. Sometimes it's because turbulent air will knock dust loose to float through the chamber. I can only imagine that, over time, tiny lint particles built up in the detector, so the air turbulence created by the dryer would knock that lint off the walls to float through the beam. For future reference, you can pop the cover off and clean out the sensor with canned air. Less plastic in the landfill!

There are times I watch your videos on a topic I consider myself very knowledgeable about but because of your detailed explorations of that topic and well-structured development from history to early models then to more complex modern technologies, I find that I learn a lot about the things I thought I already fully understood! Yes, it raises complexity and maintenance, but it increases reliability in the "I'm standing here right now" sense - not being able to charge your 0% car because some web service is down in the cloud or there's a problem with your account would be infuriating.

The tough thing for me is trying to find replacements for all in one led fixtures because by the time the light starts to fail, the company doesn't even make them anymore in that style, in fact it's so old it not even on their discontinued list anymore. So then I go down the rabbit hole of trying to find a chip that can safely work for that driver but the specifications for the driver are extremely confusing and I just give up. And when it's a commercial building you can't just replace on light fixture in a room full of them without having to change them all so I'm not entirely keen on them for commercial use when you have 20 of them and the product is sold a unit that no longer exists.

You had left-wing environmentally minded people hating them because of the heavy-metal issue, and you had right-wing libertarian/conservative people hating them because they were being forced on them by the government. Combine that with some of the other issues with them and it was a recipe for everybody hating them.

  13. HVAC technician here. Your explanation and overview was great! However you missed one key safety feature, the rollout switch. This is there to stop operation if positive pressure from the blower motor is entering the heat exchanger through an existing crack. That positive pressure will prevent the draft motor from doing its job and flames will rollout of the heat exchanger. Set to trip if it detects flame!

  15. One interesting part of the water heater that you didn't mention (because that isn't part of the story you were telling) is those things on the water pipes near the top of the tank. They are Dielectric insulated unions, which provide dielectric insulation between two dissimilar metals, which prevents galvanic corrosion. The tanks are usually steel, and the water pipes copper, so that insulation is needed between them.

Here in Australia the use of reversible heat-pumps is very common so those videos always give me a good laugh, we've got a three decade old Carrier unit and some other modern high efficiency Mitsubishis (split systems are very common here) however it doesn't get all that cold here but the more southern states do rely on gas heating a lot more than up north. About a decade ago the government also subsidized insulation installation for 1.2 million homes for AU$1.5 billion (approx. one B-2 Spirit stealth bomber), the program has since saved >100 TWh of electricity, pushed back the growth trend of natural gas consumption by two years and saved an equivalent 27 million tonnes of CO2.

  21. Try UV-curable resin. It's pretty thick, so it sticks well, and you can easily do multiple coatings. And the best of all, just shine a UV light on it and it's ready within seconds. I'm using it myself with fluorescent dyes to create vibrant red and orange colors from blues.

A quick explanation as to why the laser diode is lit all the time; what you're seeing when it's not writing is the laser diode in bias mode, laser diodes are very slow (relatively speaking) when switching from off to on, so the diode is kept on at low (bias) power which enables it to switch to writing power much faster.

As a lighting nerd (I work on the science end of the lighting industry), I was excited when I started seeing LED Xmas lights years ago, then learned how much harder it was to make warm white, then rectified lights. I wasn't a fan of the purples and orange lights you spoke of, but took it in stride as progress. Now when discussing lighting design and our emotional (and circadian) response to lighting with others, the lights of yore are something I miss. Thank you for reminding me of something I'd long accepted as "that's just the way it is now" so many years ago. There's a certain part of me that both cringes and appreciates that as technology moves forward, we still manage to bring it full circle to as close to a 1:1 of what we used to have. I'm glad you're enjoying these. :)

I just tried pouring some powder before starting the machine (my washer doesn't have that second section) and it worked wonders! I can finally use this thing instead of using it as a drying rack.

  34. Very nice work. Greetings from a PIR nerd. Some notes - the hidden "disco ball" mirror array inside some sensor devices are actually an array of parabolas as in car headlights. These are individually designed to focus infrared light from a specific incident angle to the very center of the pyroelectric crystal elements inside the detector. Similarly, the lenses in a fresnel lens-array are also each designed to focus light in the same manner, such that from a selected coverage pattern of incident angles, each has a lens that causes light from that direction to be focused to the middle of the detector. As part of the design process the effective coverage pattern pattern is raytraced with a simple stochastic photon model from the detector crystal elements out and through lenses and/or parabolic reflectors and into the environment. This gives the predicted coverage pattern which conceptually is like a cluster of big chunky and hazy-edged beams of "inverse light" - detection lobes with alternating polarity, a bit like an antenna gain map. We then analyze the predicted performance by passing thermal contrast dummies through these beams which generates simulated waveforms across the detector crystals. Based on this we can tune the design for the intended application - indoor, outdoor, different mounting positions and angles etc.

  38. For the airbrushing solution, if you're looking to dramatically increase the durability and colour-staying power, try an airbrush varnish! When applied properly it doesn't effect the colour (So I assume the light output would go mostly unchanged) and it's what's commonly used for miniature painting to protect models from grubby dirty gamer fingers. As an added bonus, it can be applied after drying, each colour, so it doesn't add much to your current process.

  45. The first Sony Handycam in 1985 repeated the same mistakes, except even worse. It was also a record-only device, and instead of a through-the-lens viewfinder, its viewfinder was simply a hole you look through, so it gave you no indication of focusing. And Video8 was a new format at the time, so almost no one had an existing VCR for it yet, unlike Beta's eight-year head-start before the BetaMovie arrived. In fact, it's quite remarkable that Video8 didn't become yet another failed format, but I guess after losing the biggest format war in history, Sony was stubborn and unwilling to concede defeat again, so they kept on making Video8, Hi8, and Digital8 camcorders (obviously with much improved functionality over the years) all the way until the very end of the analog video era in 2007.

  46. Chinese-American home cook here - thanks for featuring this thing! I got one a few years back and I love it to death. Got used to the controls pretty quickly. Truthfully there can be a bit of mysticism around wok cooking, particularly around the elusive "wok hei", the flavor that comes with ultra high temp oil in wok cooking. But really, not that many Chinese home cooks are getting proper "wok hei" at home, especially not in cities. For that either you would have an outdoor wok oven, which a lot of country homes in China do, or the restaurant. You ain't getting it in a home range, gas or induction. And the QOL improvement of keeping the kitchen cool more than makes up for it. Sidenote, in my old apartment with a gas range I would try to "cheat" my way to wok hei by removing the little cap on the gas burner so it would shoot out just a straight jet of blue flame. DO NOT DO THIS. But girls would get a kick out of it!

  48. I worked in HVAC for over a decade, mostly doing residential install and service. I have been disgusted by the experiences of friends family members in recent years as the large companies now dominating the local region are obviously engaged in serious price-gouging and seem to have a policy to refuse to repair existing units in order to encourage easy, high-profit replacements. And this was true even before the economic woes of the 2020's. I'm sure that it's even worse today. Get as many quotes as practical and look up equipment prices on your own to be as informed as possible. While small, fly-by-night companies might be unlicensed scammers, experience suggests that the large companies in my area are doing most of the scamming and fraud.
